Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Poetry is about "communication" and "connection"!. A poem is the poet's creation that is supposed to put into your head and heart what they see and feel in their own!. A great poem is one that captures the essence of something in fewer words than could possibly describe it!. Tone, form, style, voice, rhythm or rhyme, all play a part, but in the end it either communicates something to you or it doesn't!. There are many famous poets that literary critics have deemed "great", but are unknown to a larger public because their words failed to connect to a broader audience!. The greatest measure of greatness is posterity!.!.!.if your poem is read by someone 50 years from now, it's passed a certain test of time that says it was worth remembering!. All the fancy words, deep thoughts, great forms, etc!., mean nothing if the poem fails to survive in the consciousness of the audience!. The same thing makes a great poet today as it did 1000 years ago!.!.!.the better you communicate your thoughts, the greater the audience and universal thought you conveyed, the greater the chance it will survive to be remembered!.!.!.and in the end, that's what it's all about!.Www@QuestionHome@Com a good poet for one has to know what he or she is talking about!. For example if you were to write a poem about Hinduism than you have to know about Hinduism! You also have to describe what your writing about!. If it is a longer poem make the descriptions longer and highly detailed!. If the poem is shorter make the description detailed but not as long!. For example: Longer: She touched the golden brown hair on the top of her daughters heart-shaped head as she regained her unheard thoughts!. Shorter: She laid her hand across her daughters golden brown hair as her thoughts remained unheard!. A wider vocabulary the better the poetry!. A great poet is someone who is open to the emotions needed for poetry AND has the skills to translate the emotion into words!.!.!. I am not sure if I am a great poet but I am not worried about it!.
