If you are not being forced to write a sonnet, if you only have to write a "poem", a sonnet is probably not the choice you want to make!. Why!? because it is a structured poem with specific rhyme patterns and meter requirements!. It's like getting an assignment to paint a picture and you decide you're going to copy a Rembrandt!. You might consider "Haiku", where you only have to worry about syllable count!.!.!.like this: 5 - 7 - 5!.!.!.
Saber ice hangs down (5)
Like the dragons winter teeth (7)
Dripping drops of Spring (5)

or try an acrostic, where the first letter of each word spells something when read vertically (help me):

Has anyone

Maybe you don't

I'd recommend one of these!.!.!.sonnets are not for the faint of heart and unless you do it well, people will tell you what part you messed up on instead of what you did correctly!. Just my opinion, but that's the advice I'd give!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

think of something contemporary, a nowadays theme, you don't necessarily have to write a "old fashioned" sonnet, that's what blocks you in the first place!. And I know that you're supposed to take after the Shakespearian model since it's for your English class, but if I was courageous enough I would choose Petrarch just to shock them a bit!. Besides the beats are easier to find with it!.!.!. and it's less pretentious!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
