Although sometimes seen as a "Audenesque genre of the apocalyptic nonsense poem", the poem is actually quite straightforward: The poet sees God as being something quite different than expected!.!.!.as hurtful as a "nasty surprise in a sandwich" or "a pin in a sock"!.!.!.the "serious mistake in a nightie" is a reference to either someone who shouldn't wear a "nightie" (too obese, too old, etc!.) or someone too seductive to the point where you regret it later!. The "grave" disappointment is a play on words indicating that all you can expect of being dead is a grave!.!.!.no afterlife, ergo no life after death as expected!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
