Sonnet 60 "Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore"

Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,
So do our minutes hasten to their end,
Each changing place with that which goes before
In sequent toil all forwards do contend!.
Nativity, once in the main of light,
Crawls to maturity, wherewith, being crowned,
Crooked eclipses 'gainst his glory fight
And Time that gave, doth now his gift confound!.
Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth,
And delves the parallels in beauty's brow,
Feeds on the rarities of natures truth,
And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow;
And yet, to times, in hope, my verse shall stand,
Praising thy worth, despite his cruel hand!.

The sonnet says that the passing minutes of our lives are moving us constantly toward death, just as the incoming tide is constantly moving toward the shore!. But in the final two lines, the poet declares that poetry can conquer death, that by praising his beloved in a poem he can confer a kind of immortality!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's very beautiful!. It's from Sonnet 60!.

The most precise thing that I can say about it is that it suggests to me that time moves more like the ocean than like, say, a clock!.
