Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Like almost any writing –

Positives:

Structure
Rhythm (if appropriate)
Expression
Message
Originality of thought or concept

Negatives:

Wasted words
Clichés
Unintended switch of thought…rambling or self pity (though this is a hard one because much of the great poetry is written from self pity - you just can't make it blatant and first person I think)

Lots of other things driven by personal bias!!!!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The biggest percentage of poetry contests are scams and the only thing they are looking for is money!. The poetry doesn't matter as most of the judges have no idea what poetry is, or anything about it!. The only way to know is to submit something, and see if you are a semifinalist, and will get published, you just have to buy the book!. Usually at three times the going rate for anthology books!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Vocabulary, command of language, try to keep away from any thoughts or expressions of ignorance ie!. filthy language, verbal pornography , proper spelling, proper word usage!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

people have different views and taste in poetry,
a good poem is one that you will be able to recite at the drop of a hat and always remember itWww@QuestionHome@Com

The poem should have the power to make the reader feel the same way the person writting it was able to feel!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
