Question: Is this unrhymed piece a poem!?
What Shall I Do
by Elaine P

What shall I do
with all this stuff,
a lifetime of gathering
this and that
how much may I take
on such a long journey!?

Dozens of carved figures
hundreds of books
thousand of photos
how can they fit
in one small dome
on a distant planet!?

I will pretend a tornado
has destroyed all I own
including my checkbook
and my unpaid bills
I will take two books
the complete works of Shakespeare
and Oh What a Tangled Web!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
This, sweet one, is so full of fun
A joy to read and remember
I know we will be
In tranquility
On Mars, as is our pleasure!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That was wonderful Elaine!.!.!.!.really wonderful!.!.!.and the things mentioned in the last two lines are all that you need to take with you as a poet!.!.!.!.our TD's book and the mighty book of Shakespeare!.!.!.and if i could be there on Mars, i shall sing songs from both the book for you!.!.!.

You spotted snakes with double tongue,
Thorny hedgehogs, be not seen;
Newts and blind-worms, do no wrong;
Come not near our fairy queen!.

Philomel, with melody,
Sing in our sweet lullaby;
Lulla, lulla, lullaby; lulla, lulla, lullaby!
Never harm,
Nor spell nor charm,
Come our lovely lady nigh;
So, good night, with lullaby!.

Weaving spiders, come not here;
Hence, you long-legg'd spinners, hence!
Beetles black, approach not near;
Worm nor snail, do no offence!.

Philomel, with melody,
Sing in our sweet lullaby;
Lulla, lulla, lullaby; lulla, lulla, lullaby!
Never harm,
Nor spell nor charm,
Come our lovely lady nigh;
So, good night, with lullaby!.

good night Elaine!.!.!.!.!.!.and that was my favourite song from 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'!.!.!.!.a lullaby infact to bid you good night!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

To me this is definitely a poem!. It draws me in immediately - as if I was a friend in whom you were confiding!. It flows well, if tells me things about you!. I love the last verse, as it shows me some-one who is trying to throw off excess baggage (perhaps for the first time!?) but who knows what the essentials are to them!.

The problem with well constructed, rule-following verses is, that much as I love them, their structure creates a distancing between the writer and the reader!. What do you think!?

I suppose one minor point must be is, that you and I and about a dozen other people know to what you are referring, but the majority of visitors to this page
don't!. So - for publication, or for keeping long-term you would have to restructure the second verse!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!. Not all poems necessarily rhyme!. If it has a tune though, then it's not a poem!. It's a song!. The way you know if something is a poem is by the way they wrote it!. Only punctuation at the end of a paragraph!. Wouldn't make sense as a small essay or anything!. Deep and "poetic"!. If the answer to all of those is, yes, which in this case is true, then it's a poem!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes it is!. This type of poem is called 'free verse' because it does not rhyme and has no particular pattern to it!. Many great poets wrote this way!. Did you know there are actually 51 different types of poetry!? Many of these types do not rhyme but I don't think that matters because poetry is an art- it doesn't have to be understood by the reader in the same way that the author intended it to!. It's all about personal interpretation!. I think your poem was very good!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Oh Elaine, a free verse poem is nonetheless, beautiful and stirring!.
What is this thing people have about rhyming anyway!. Perhaps snobs or school kids I'm thinking!.

This has a rhythm that I very much appreciate!. The storyline is so interesting and intriguing!. What to bring!?!?
You've done very well with this one!. You put the reader right there with you which is crucial to the writing!. A lot of people think this is easy!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.It Ain't!!! :O)))
I love it!!!! Write on!Www@QuestionHome@Com

yes it is a poem!. when writeing poems there are NO rules!. like they dont have to rhyme at all!. they can be anything you want them to be!. and the best part is it dosent have to make sense to anyone but you!. as long as you understand it and you call it a poem its a poem!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

So cryptic one, am I supposed to take you literally or metaphorically!? Is this a poem!? Is peanut butter not butter of peanuts!? Is this a poem!? Is not wine grapes of wrath!? Oops that's the morning after!. Yes, it is a very well written poem!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Board of Directors of the Poetry Department, Division of Meters and Measures, has instructed me to inform you that the above has been classified as a Poem- Class A, Section 37!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It has a tendency towards being a piece of prose i!.e Ordinary writing as distinguished from verse!. But then prose is a form of poetry, but as such has to be read in a way that its particular style is acceptable!.
