When you write something -- a poem, a play, a novel, a short story, a piece of non-fiction, any written work -- you own the copyright from the moment your creation comes into existence, whether you write it on paper or type it on a computer. You can pay to register your copyright with the U.S. government if you choose, but that's not necessary. For more information, check out this website:

Put your work in an envelope and post it to yourself. When it arrives keep it safe but DO NOT open it. You now have a date on your work and can prove it belongs to you.

Simple. At the end of every poem just write the letter 'c' and make a circle over the letter. It is copy righted. Have fun.

You do not need to go through any legal process to copyright your work. Copyright is automatically vested in the author at the point of creation. Nor do you need to put any little symbols to claim copyright -- these can be used as reminders to others, but they are not a copyrighting mechanism.

You can send a copy to yourself, though this can be of doubtful evidential value if presented in court, contrary to common assumption. If you feel the need to do this (it's almost certainly over the top for poetry compositions), make sure to use Registered Post.
