Why all the stress over rhyming and not rhyming poetry.?

Question:I am getting tired of posting a poem and someone saying I don't like rhyming poems. then I write a free verse poem and I get hammered for not rhyming. It is all poetry. Get a clue. A poem is a poem is a poem. A Haiku is a poem and no one says oh it does not rhyme. Open your minds people. Poetry comes in many types and styles just like people. Just deal with the poem presented. If you only like rhyming poems only comment on rhyming poems.

I write rhyming poetry, and many times I get comments like "it's forced". As long as the rhyme is consistent with the subject, it is NOT forced. You, on the other hand write both unrhyming as well as rhyming, so you have to listen to both sides of the issue. Occassionally you write in free verse where there is no rhyme or rhythm and you hear from a third faction. Take heart now, Dark Prince, for the better you get the more the unknowing masses will try to tear you down to their level. Even many of the so called creative writing experts and self proclaimed poets were trained by this same type person. Therefore you have someone who thinks poetry has no rules at all, or that is has strict rules, or that you makes the rules as you go. Even the ones we call 'the masters' has differing opinions of poetry. If I read poetry,, and the words flow with a poetic rhythm, meaning it doesn't read choppily and faultingly, I consider it poetry. If the subject jumps here, there, and somewhere else and bounces around like a landmine in Vietnam, I consider it bad poetry, no matter how well the flow. If there is no flow, it's just disjointed words. So you see, it's the good quality of your work that brings all these know-it-all critics out of the woodwork and into your computer. The next time someone says your rhyming is forced, just remind yourself that they are a mindless idiot who was probably taught that in school by another mindless idiot.

Forget about the illiterate, we are not here to educate as many are from the old school anyway. To try to get them to understand or comprehend free verse would elevate your frustration and stress levels beyond limitations set down by the National Space Agency.
Your position is to share what you enjoy doing. Ours is to enjoy what you have to share.
Those who condemn should take the time to check out some sites about free verse and the new poetry. Ha ha ha...they need to upgrade their memory banks. All the information they need is on the Internet. They should be careful to condemn as they may be condemned themselves. It is very easy to block them...then they will not see your posts.

Sure, there are no fixed rules for poetry. Poetry can be written in a variety of ways. It is not compulsory for a poem to rhyme. And, after all, poetry is so personal, it may carry any personal message the poet chooses to convey.

I completely agree with you, people should just chill out and enjoy poetry whether it rhymes or not. =)

I don't like using rhyme in my poetry, but if someone else wants to then more power to them. I'll only comment on the rhyming when it seems forced, too corny, or if the poem seems too dependent on the rhyming.

I am a total convert to unrhymed poetry as long as the meter is rhymical - this from a dyed-in-the-wool total advocate of rhyming poetry when I started writing poetry (around 1995)
But, I find it much harder to write unrhymed poetry than rhyming, as in my head I have a weevil, who is mischievous and evil and he forces me to write in rhyme instead.

You go dark Prince. I agree with you all the way. Don`t you
hate being mocked and torn apart by some dumbass? If
they don`t like it , then move on. We work very hard on our
poems and Haiku`s. Then someone comes along and
dumps on you. I`ve been talking about this for days, and
they continue to do it. You tell them too stop and they don`t.
They are nasty little creatures. You just write whatever you
want. I for one, will always give you a thumbs up.

I personally take great joy in the incredible range of knowledge, intelligence, and literacy found here. Some of the regular contributors are learned, gifted and wise beyond belief. But none gave me as much satisfaction as the young lady who said that she didn't finish my poem because she was "board."

i know! if there were the same styles then everything would be too boring to read! we would be asleep by the first word!
i'm thankful for the fact that my friends understand that i dont have to rhyme. they like my poetry either way and i feel lucky...i love your poetry steve! you are the master...i wont ever stop saying it...it doesnt matter if you rhyme or not, what matters is the feeling you put into the poem...and make sure they understand or you could make then guess...
