dreaming about the past
being stuck in the past
"I have dream'd of joy departed "
he is sad and longing for his past...

MAYBE the message is
"What could there be more purely bright
In Truth's day-star? —"

that in the light, there is truth...

no idea

Cool!

I'd say it was a man's inner struggle with himself, on the one hand he would like to enjoy life, but on the other he knows that he can do such a thing because he's been where he's been, and he's seen too much to ever be the same again.

IDK... but i ? Edgar Allan Poe and i am doing a report on him in school! i can really... well when i read his stories and poems its like i'm in a world elsewhere! like beyond the horizon or in vast dead place!!!!!

It is obviously about love and the loss of it. He has to go on although he remembers her and is broken-hearted over her loss. She must have died as he speaks of "a lonely spirit guiding." If you read it line by line and take time to think about what he's saying, it makes a lot of sense.

I have never seen this particular poem by Poe before so thank you for sharing!

I would say that he was dreaming of the past or someone who has passed away in his dreams and It had made him very happy only to awake in the morning and face reality and he wants to know why he cant hold on to this feeling all day as he did in his sleep and if he did and he lived in the past would it really be so bad and why do people always say it is time to move on. let the past lie in the past.,

I love POE he is greatg

this if just my take on the poem. GL

I think he is dreaming of a lost love but is woken by the sun. He day dreams of his lost love and is reminded of her by all the things the sun touches, and thinks of the past.
Maybe he feels that the sunlight is somehow his lost love shining on him and guiding him.
And his feels her light even thru storm and night. But even though the sun brings him close to her again................
It will still take her away in the morning when it wakes him from dreaming of her. The day star is the sun bringing him back to reality.

The message is that he finds in the sun a live that he frees his from, the life of these sorrows and rememberances of his love, and the terrors of his grave.

the usual, everyone's dead and now i'm alone.
