The courage that my mother had
Went with her, and is with her still:
Rock from New England quarried;
Now granite in a granite hill.
The golden brooch my mother wore
She left behind for me to wear;
I have no thing I treasure more:
Yet, it is something I could spare.
Oh, if instead she'd left to me
The thing she took into the grave!
That courage like a rock, which she
Has no more need of, and I have.

I have cut and pasted this from the web. To me it sounds as if the end is missing - if not, I think it is a pretty useless poem.
Who wrote it? I could do better myself.

The rhyme of the poem is alternating lines and the lines are quite short. To my ears this sounds jerky and harsh. The third, fourth and fifth lines are filled with hard consonant sounds Rock, England, Quarried, granite (twice)and even Golden which creates a solid concrete sound pattern - nothing smooth, or soft or sweet. The writer didn't have a comfortable childhood, and you feel the mother's life was really hard - no time for sentiment here.

Sorry, I thought a simple, non-technical answer would suffice.
