You will not make a living out of writing poetry -- writing poetry and waiting for a reaction has been compared to dropping a petal into the Grand Canyon and waiting for the echo. You can show your work to your friends, of course, and on sites like this, though you should be aware that if you are looking for constructive criticism, you will not get much of that, as most people, understandably of course, don't wish to appear discouraging or dampening of enthusiasm, so comments tend to be fulsome in praise even where the poem offered is on the mediocre side.

You do not need to do anything to copyright your work. Copyright is automatically vested in the author at the point of creation, that's how the law on copyright works.

The tips about sending a copy to yourself have nothing to do with claiming formal copyright, they are merely ways of establishing dates and precedence should any conflict arise. If you do use the "envelope" method, make sure it is sent by registered post, and kept unopened. Alternatively, you can lodge a copy in a sealed envelope with your bank.

The usefulness of this for a work of amateur poetry is very slight, though, and will be more bother than it is worth.

Just write and write and write, look for criticism, and don't take it personally if it's not always praise. The man who never made a mistake never made anything.

If there is any work you think might go well in a song, send them to me XD

I will try to write the music to it, and you will be recognised as the song writer.

Or you could get them published. Google puclishers and send some samples of your work to them, I wouldn;t wory about copyrighting just yet.

Good luck any how.

I am a uni English student and in my Poetry lecture today, a poet came in and spoke to us about writing poetry - and he said that you can never make a living out of it and if you look at writers of the past pretty much no one ever has.

BUT if you want to go into a job like teaching English at a fairly high level then you can get poetry published through your rep etc. Only 3% of everything that gets published in the UK is poetry and that includes whats inside greetings cards!

If you feel passionate about poetry and just want to do it for pleasure then displaying it on your own website can get some support and maybe some kind of fan base....

Copywriting can be very easy. All you need to do is print off your poetry and send it to yourself. Do not unseal the envelope- that should be enough to prevent those copy-cats getting away with it.

take one of the "t"s out of writting
I'm sure you will find that more fitting
Your question seemed so inviting
but I think you meant to say writing
