Position:Home>Poetry> Help! Does this poem make sense to you?

Question:Please tell me what you think it means...
I understand it perfectly, but it's for school, so I have to be sure my teacher gets the meaning of it.

Oh yes, he thought he had it made,
Having not only one rainbow,
But two, each with its own pot
Of gold. This is a gardener’s woe.

Sadly, he just did not realize,
Both the rainbows he could not keep.
Paid both a visit long ago,
He knew he had planted too deep.

One of those rainbows he knew,
But he never reached the gold.
Much too young to know the chase,
That flower he could not hold.

The second rainbow came so fast,
Grand master of the art of bold.
Its length much shorter than the first,
Quicker he found the stem of gold.

Through that summer, the gold was there,
But like a candle it did melt.
The first rainbow behind a cloud,
Confused about how its rose felt.

Seems to be about taking things for granted, though it's not entirely clear what. I could go with the two girls interpretation, but if that's exactly what you're going for it's not completely clear. I'd suggest you try not to inverse your language (lines like "both the rainbows he could not keep" instead of "he could not keep both the rainbows"). It makes the poem sound archaic and it's harder to read that way. Also, I didn't totally understand the lines "Much too young to know the chase/ That flower he could not hold." Just doesn't make sense in the narrative. Same thing for "Grand master of the art of bold." Hope that helped. Really interesting project... I like what you're trying to do here. Good luck!

Awesome!!!
It makes total sense!!!

I am thinking it is talking about a boy who Through away his girl for another stupid girl just because she was easier..
In the end he realized it was a mistake but it may be to late and he is left with neither girl =( stupid guy
