Question Home

Position:Home>Poetry> How many years has it been since you flew a kite?

Question:Please come!
Paper and string, and bring
(You should.)
Some strips of wood.

Whatever fancy tickles your thought
I bought some stuff for a tail, it's not
Too bright, but I think it will do.

The winds are whipping
Like a lash.
(Don't fret, our kite will never crash.)

But soar and swirl
Like a pinwheel bright.
Come! Come!
Let's fly our kite!

Hell.... in the WINDS here in Wyoming, such a FLIMSY kite wouldn't last 5 minutes!!!! We have to have them built STRONG to withstand the "LIGHT" breezes of 10-15mph which prevail around here most days! When it's REALLY gusty, you find speeds averaging 25-35mph.

I tried flying kites around here, but the winds were too much of a hindrance... unless you have some REAL MONEY to buy a STRONG kite made of cloth! (You can see for yourself at the website below... you're talking $115 for a kite ON SALE!)

Have an "artsy" day.

I flew one last weekend and it was alot of fun!

Thanks for the literary commentary, its been too long.

It was last spring :)

65 years, sonny

just this past weekend, but i didn't use that poem.

Good question....ermmm about 4 years ago mayb lol. I wanna fly one now i used to go to the beach all the time and do it. :)

I havnt flown one in years not since i was like 5 or 6!

I'd say about 35 years ago, when I was 12.

flew one last fall with the granddaughter and shes staying with us this weekend and want to fly it again

5-6. But I've never actually crafted one, as depicted in your poem.

Twenty years ago. Are you giving lessons? A windy poem but for kites, nicely done.

a poem , nicely written.

ghost.

Oh what a joyful poem! I want to fly a kite now. Love your poem.

******** My Kite ********

My shiny kite made like a box,
About a mile of string.
The wind atop this highest spot,
Will make the box kite sing.

The ribbons stretched from end to end,
A lovely whistle make.
The tail must hang a long way down,
And looks much like a snake.

Mount Lemmon is the highest spot,
For many many miles.
And when all Tucson sees my kite,
The town is full of smiles.

My string is wrapped around the winch,
On my old army jeep.
I hope it doesn't pull it down,
Into the canyon deep.

I'll let it out and let it up,
For all the state to see.
A tiny speck up in the air,
Is all that it will be.

If Tee Dee's friend named Walter,
Should spot my kite so high.
I hope he doesn't eat it up,
For surely I would cry.

How many years since I flew a kite
Too many years my friend, so I just might.
I've been told to do that once in awhile
My answer is always,-- just a small smile.
Forget your worries, breathe in the fresh air,
As into the blue vast sky, you stare.
Watch colours glide and swerve in flight
I remember it being a wonderful sight.

One of the art classes I teach is for toddlers 2-4years and their parents. Just a couple weeks ago we made paper kites in class with long crepe paper tails. You're lovely poem makes me hope that some day one of the children or perhaps a parent will look fondly back at the day when they made a kite and then flew it high in the sky together. Thanks for sharing your memory.

We have gale force winds in the mountains of Pennsylvania as well. I enjoy your poetry, but have no talent of my own along those lines. ;-)
Our granddaughter from Tibet came to us knowing how to fly kites. That is one of the first fond memories that I have of her.

nice one....very nice poem...and the thoughts you put in made me a child again...it is nearly 10 years since i flew a kite...then i was a boy and had friends all around...shouting and running...

I have never flown a kite, but after reading your poem and all the answers, I wish I had done so. I've seen so many manufactured kites; it must have been fun to make a kite and actually see it soar into the air.
