Question:ya so I LOVE the poem I TOO SING AMERICA BY LANGSTON HUGUES but ive always wondered what exactly it means
i dont understand what the I TOO SING AMERICA PART is about
but anyways heres the poem
I Too Sing America

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
when company comes,
but I laugh,
and eat well,
and grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
when company comes.
nobody'll dare
say to me,
"eat in the kitchen"
then.

Besides,
they'll see how beautiful I am
and be ashamed--

I, too, am America

Because he was dealing first-hand with rampant effects of racism and segregation, I can only imagine that Hughes felt almost locked out of his own country. The "too" refers to the fact that he was just as much a member of this country as the white supremacists that felt themselves superior. He humanizes himself by saying that he laughs and eats and grows and loves this country just as much as the white people do--that there really wasn't as much difference between the two races as people thought.

This is a poem from the viewpoint of a black person, when segregation was alive and well in this free country.

this is very good
