Position:Home>Poetry> Anyone know a poem on pilgrimage by Sir Walter Raleigh?

Question:There is a poem thought to be by Sir Walter Ralegh (1554-1618) called 'The Passionate Man's Pilgrimage' (ca. 1604).
However, according to The Oxford Companion to English Literature this is now thought not to have actually been written by him.

Just to note...The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography spells his name 'Ralegh' rather than 'Raleigh' although the spelling with the 'i' seems to be in common usage now.

You can find the full text of the poem and some information about the story surrounding it at the following websites.

There is a poem entitled "His Pilgrimage", written by Sir Walter Raleigh.
Google "Walter Raleigh pilgrimage".

Sir Walter Raleigh
The Pilgrimage
GIVE me my scallop-shell of quiet,
My staff of faith to walk upon,
My scrip of joy, immortal diet,
My bottle of salvation,
My gown of glory, hope's true gage;
And thus I'll take my pilgrimage.

Blood must be my body's balmer;
No other balm will there be given:
Whilst my soul, like quiet palmer,
Travelleth towards the land of heaven;
Over the silver mountains,
Where spring the nectar fountains;
There will I kiss
The bowl of bliss;
And drink mine everlasting fill
Upon every milken hill.
My soul will be a-dry before;
But, after, it will thirst no more.
