The bard is oppressed by the stress of life's pains which lead him to an excruciating insomnia. Neither the night's colour, or lack thereof, nor the grace of day can be enjoyed due to his melancholia.

His motives are his alone and can only be speculated upon. His ambiguity & choice of subjects make the poem timeless. Heartache, insomnia, oppression, day & night, none of which seem to be going any where. All are part of the human condition.

There are several puns, of which one may over look. Find them, they're brilliant.
