Position:Home>Poetry> How do you interpret the closing stanza of this poem?

Question:This is a poem based on Gunn's "Considering the Snail," by Christopher Barnes. It is causing me real headaches because I cannot fathom Barnes' meaning. the previouas two stanzas have described a sleeping slug.

"Tomorow you should wonder at
a late riser. From a slug's angle
these lie-doggo impulsions
are not where the after-image is nudging
but airing sleep its self."

Is it a paen to sleep for sleep's sake?

I believe you are correct - sleep is worthy and satisfying in its own right.
