I need help replacing a stanza in a poem?

Question:The stanza before it is
The Special Someone,
You know you can trust
Your one true love
Not a whirlwind of lust

Now the next stanza says
the big bad world
shielding the one
The chance to discover
Life has just begun

Now I think I need another way of saying 'big bad world', and without sounding kiddie-ish. Also, I need to rework 'shielding the one', to decsribe perhaps finding my one true love. But I don't know what to replace these lines with?
Please give any suggestions!
