Position:Home>Poetry> Do poets and writers suffer emotionally? If so Why?

Question:it depends and what you consider poetry. is poetry about the poem or the poet?

POEM: then it is the main objective to portray a level of emotion, so that the reader can relate/sympathise etc. but the poem cannot be overpowered by the poets personal thoughts and emotions. the poem is suppose to let you make ur own mind up, not have others impose their own feelings on to you. so the poet doesnt have to be personally suffering from emotion to do this.

POET: then yes, it is the person we want see, know more about them. to achieve this, then the best way is to portray as much emotion as you can. suffering from emotion is key.

hope that helps
:)

some people turn to poetry after emotional sufferring...but i think on the whole poets are pretty normal people. =]
but then, i'm insane so probably no help.

Edit: Alobar says it well

During the writing process, you mean? Frustration plays a huge part in almost everything -- can be that way with everything from composing to finishing. (I tend to run out of steam and get lazy quite often.) As for other aspects of our lives, why do you think we write?!

writers block makes for some good suffering....its like being a fantastic sports player and just not being able to do it for no reason except a weird mental breakdown

People suffer emotionally, some of them are writers, some of them are written about.

not generally. there are a lot, but not all poets and writers are like suicidal or emo. these kind of people has been going through mishaps; family problem, quarrel among friends and the worst - heartbroken from a past lover or problems that deal with "love". the good thing about writing, depressed people ease their grievances somehow through writing. that makes them gifted writers. without there intense of emotions, whether they're happy esp. when they are sad, they will not have the so-called "inspiration" which motivates them to jot down the ideas that sums up into a poem or any kind of literary work. but mostly, emotional people are the best writers. because their feelings reflect on their work and they can freely express their thoughts because it is one of the effective ways to release the burdens. and people find it appreciative, because they can relate with it. ;)
