The characters are people who live in a dream of one kind or another world because reality is too harsh and painful to bear!. They try to hide or run away from their problems by drinking!. They lie to themselves to avoid facing reality!. Some tell themselves that something great is on the horizon, but it never arrives, it's always just beyond their reach!. One is the life of the party, buying drinks for everyone, telling jokes, loving an audience, but away from the bar, his own life is empty!.

The people O'Neill portrayed 70 (!?) years ago are the same that Shakespeare portrayed 400 years ago, and the same that Homer and Sophocles portrayed 2,500 years ago!.

To paraphrase Khan Noonien Singh (from "Space Seed," an episode from the original "Star Trek"):
It saddens me to see how little man has changed in the past 3,000 years!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
