i dont think he was trying to be insulting (shouldve been worded differently regardless) towards atheists with the 'smarter than thou' question, people do tend to take that sort of an approach when dealing with this topic, but of course the ball swings both ways and thats often a reaction to or countered by the 'im holier than thou' tactic

thus why the question asks for proof AGAINST a god, in his world its a given!. for the atheists its the exact opposite, it seems the question must be posed in one way or the other!. i cant think of an unbiased way to ask it!. the answer will always be to turn the question around

it seems to me that it comes down to a personal choice made by each and every one of us!. the choice that follows immediately is whether or not others should also accept your personal choice or not!. some (like me) have no problem with either side cause i dont see the reason why everyone should (figuratively) be beat over the head with a bible or koran or any doctrine!. i do encourage personal exploration into the matter thru both science and spirituality, but i dont like arguing someone else's truth with my own

also, your question is a bit inconsistent, if you want serious discussion try not to start off by insulting or insinuating the opposition is already wrongWww@QuestionHome@Com

Atheists don't believe that all life came from a heap of goo either!. Most don't believe in anything nor feel the need to!.

One way of answering your question is to say that if something doesn't exist there is no way to either prove it exists or doesn't exist!. This is no cause for pause for an atheist as most would dismiss the issue as not being worthy of further discussion!. No one gets upset that there is no proof that unicorns don't exist either!.

What you have to confront as a believer is the knowledge that belief is NOT knowledge and the belief in God is not knowledge of God!. If you examine your beliefs you will find that they are there because you grew up in a family and community that attached severe penalties for non-belief!. In some countries, such as Muslim countries, you could even lose your life!. In the USA you can still lose your job and ability to have a family or home!. This doesn't speak well of the charity or love of religions!.

So for some atheists disbelief is an attempt to reclaim the sanity and humanity of our lives without the threat that you must believe anything!.

This is not a contest as to who is the smartest or whether scriptures are fairy tales or that life came from a heap of goo!. All of those issues are just tangent distractions!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Give it a rest, my friend!.

First, atheists do not have to disprove your hypothesis of God!. The burden of proof is on the party that proposes the hypothesis; not on the opposition to disprove!.

Second, God's existence has been argued for centuries by the most brilliant philosophers from each side!. There is no winner and there will not be!. You might as well take the position of Kierkegaard's leap of faith or Pascal's wager!. If that works with you, more power to you!. Just don't push it on others!. After all, it is about inner peace, isn't it!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have always wondered the same thing! To not believe that there is a God you once had to believe or think he might be real!.
Kind of like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny!.!.most kids believe in then, until they are old enough to figure the truth out!. I am of the opinion that atheists are much the same they have heard of God, yet do to their education or some life altering event they choose to not believe in him!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You ask this question in philosophy, so I will give a philosophical answer!. If you want others to believe in something (like a god or gods) then it is for you to provide evidence, not for others to disprove!.

If I say to you 'There is a 30m ape on an island!." You would right say "prove it!" !.!.!.And if I said "No you disprove it" you would think it wrong!. The same goes for god!. Just because you think he / she / it is a special case, that is not the case!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am not an atheist, but an agnostic!.

You have no proof that there is one!. They have no *solid* proof that there is not one!.
They choose not to believe in God because there is no proof from you!.

Their proof that there is not a God, is that you don't have any proof that there is!.

If there is no proof of existence then it's logical to assume that there is not one!.

I can't speak for atheists as a group, but this is my personal opinion on it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

By referring to the bible I assume you dismiss other religions God (s) which is almost similar to atheists dismissing god notion altogether!.
I believe that the concept of god has national influence, take the old testament god for example he is associated heavily with the Israelites to the degree of favoritism (when he declared them his chosen people) god only became (international) after the conversion of the Roman king!.
you mentioned if you study the bible you learn that God is Ever-loving disregarding the atrocities associated with the biblical god
- "Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD!. Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him!. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves!." (Numbers 31:16-18)

- King David another biblical celebrity "And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under the axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon!. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem!." (II Samuel 12:31)

- Another example of the godly love "Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt!. Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ***!." (I Samuel 15:2-3)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am an atheist!. Before beginning to answer your question, however, I would like to note that no argument, either from the religious side or the atheist side, has ever truly won someone over by it brute necessity!. It is a choice that one has to make, with no good reasons either way!. I have made the choice to be an atheist regardless of the large bank of facts that the religious side has to offer, and I believe it is the same for them!. There is no proof!.

If God exists he must keep epistemic distance from us!. Why!? If we knew for certain that It existed, we would no longer truly have free-will!. That is to say that if we knew that there was a God and that he was pure Good and we would be one with him for eternity if we simply followed the ethical guidelines then, well, what kind of a choice is that!. Therefore we cannot know God and maintain a ethical stance!.

A quick technical argument!. It is said that God is both infinite and transcendent (not limited and outside of this world)!. If this is true that He is infinite, then he cannot be limited by anything!. However She is outside of our world, which means that She is not our world!. He must therefore be limited by our world (for it is outside of Her)!. So He cannot be at once infinite and transcendent!. If we take the route of Her maintaining Her infinitude then that means that ALL of the evil things that occur in the world are part of God!. That means that God is not purely Good in any sense that we could recognize!. If we maintain His transcendence, it means that He is limited and therefore not perfect (perfect in the philosophical sense of not lacking anything)!. Forgive my slight of hand with adding the feminine third person singular pronoun, I try to remain gender sensitive!.

This argument falls apart of course if we consider God outside of our Understanding altogether!. In that case, though, we cannot even affirm or deny God's existence because existence is something that falls within the purview of our understanding!. So we are right back at where we started from above!.

I choose to be an atheist because I do not wish to affirm anything that might cheapen my existence here in this life!. By pinning my hopes on an after-life, or a being which knows better than man, that provides us with being, that is the actualization of everything, I then affirm that the choices we make in life do not have the weight of my entire existence!. That is to say, I have no one and nothing to blame for the world accept myself, and if I do not like something about it I am impelled to manifest my dislike in action!. Without a God there is no ultimate finality to the world, and it is up to us and us alone to make this world what it is!. It is our greatest responsibility to create meaning in a universe that is indifferent to us!. God allows us to slip into complacency and allow the world to unravel in a sickly fashion because we do not feel completely responsible for our existence!.

This is not an apodictic argument!. I am not trying to proof the existence of God false!. I am providing justification for the choice of not living my existence towards God!. It is an argument based on pathos, and as such arguments go, it is simply preaching to the choir!. No one is won over by argumentation but by brute choice!.

Lastly it is not a question of where we are from as much as it is a question of where we are going!.

Just thought of an analogy for the last point!. Existence is like a boulder rapidly rolling down a hill towards us!. It would be silly to ask, Where did that come from!!? while it was rolling towards us!. The proper question would be, where is that thing going!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, I am NOT an atheist, but I would start with

1) A huge inconsistency on how citizens of this world are treated!. If there was a god, why are there spoiled brats in this country while children are starving in others!.

2) If there was a god, why hide behind the veil of faith!?

3) If there was a god, why bother!? What's in it for him!? Wouldn't he be bored!? Lose interest!?

4) Why does he allow others to speak and kill in his name!?

All too often the easy and glib answers to these questions are simply " We cannot know the mind of god!.!.!.who are we to question!.!.!.bla bla bla!.

Now I am a believer but these questions cannot simply be glossed over!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i'm not an atheist, but neither am i a full believer!. why!? well i take one look at the world and realize how terrible the world can be!. I mean with all the starving children, rapist, murderers, kidnappers, thieves, hypocrites, it's kind of hard to believe that there's even a god at all!. The kids in Africa are dehumanized and hypnotized into thinking that killing is good!. Why doesn't God do anything!? People rape others, why doesn't God stop that!? People are starving with no place to go, why doesn't God help them!? There's so much out there that God should be doing since he is supposed to be a God who loves all his creations!.

Secondly, why does he make us believe he is real with only a book!? It's like we're trying to hold onto our beliefs with a thread!. A book!? why anyone can write a book!. I wouldnt be too surprised if it turns out that the Bible was written by a bunch of authors who created this whole religion!.

There's just too many reasons why i should NOT believe in God!. But I also want to because I believe that we should be good and not evil!. I believe that we should all love one another, no more wars, nothing!. But it happens and WHO's doing something about it!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

i am not atheist but i can tel you what they would say they would say sense their is no proof they have no reason to be live something atheists be live they are smarter because they don't fall for the false beliefs as they call it but think that people who aren't atheists are stupid because they be live in something they cannot proveWww@QuestionHome@Com

I'm not an atheist either and would normally not answer this sort of question but I do think some things about your question need clarification!.

1) I read every single answer, and no one gave any indication whatsoever that they implied they were smarter than you!. I don't know where you got that from!.

2) You are insulting those who believe in evolution by calling it a "heap of goo!." Please be more respectful of differing beliefs!.

3) Your words seem to indicate you really don't want a truthful answer, but trying to convince people here to believe what you do!.

Now, to your question!. Personally I think it is a very simple answer!. There is no way to prove OR disprove the existence of God!. Therefore, it all boils down to what the individual believes!. Neither the religionists, spiritualists or atheists can be proven wrong!. Everyone has the right to believe what it is they want and everyone else needs to accept it and respect it!. Any notion of trying to convince others of your own truth or disprove them of theirs is disrespectful of the other's personal journey!. Why don't we leave it at!.!.!.we agree to disagree!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
