I guess you could ask the exact same question when we are awake!. There is no actual "time" as we perceive it!. It is made up for society so that there are certain parts of the day for certain things!. For example, during a work day, time breaks up the day for periods so workers can have lunch and coffee breaks!. And during night time, so we can rest and let our bodies rejuvenate!. Our consciousness doesn't go anywhere!. We are still conscious, just in a state of relaxation, where the brain slows down and thoughts relax!. If our conscious disappeared when we slept, we wouldn't be able to dream!. Nobody can really answer your last question, now can they!?

Think of it like this!.!. your consciousness has a screen saver!. when you're asleep your consciousness is resting!.!. although there still are synapses firing!.!.that is what causes dreams!.
