Ryan, and few others agreeing with him, are wrong!. I want to say, firstly, that this isn't an attack on their character or intelligence!. I enjoy a good Socratic discussion!.

Let's fancy that "weird" is that which is outside of societies standards!. What does "that which" indicate!? More precisely, what does "something" indicate in "weird is something outside the norms of a society"!? The is the first problem!. A good definition should clarify what class the thing being defined is in!. Unfortunately, this definition doesn't!. It is "something" (but we knew that already)!. We want to know what kind of something it is!. Further, dead people are outside of societies norms, but are dead people really weird by virtue of being outside of social norms!? Probably not!. also, social norms do not apply to that of the "wild" and those creatures inhabiting it!. Thus, we should say animals are "weird"!. But, it seems ludicrous to say that animals are "weird" because they are outside of specific social norms!. In fact, most of the time we say the exact opposite!. We will say that the bird dropping poop in the park is acting normal; but, a man dropping poop in the park, well, we surely say that is "weird"!. Still, if we say that what is weird is that which exists outside social norms, then we will have to say that other nations and it's peoples are weird!. So every nation but America is weird, but China will look back and say every nation and its people, except the Chinese, are weird!. We will meet with a contradiction because every nation will be weird for existing outside of some social norm while also being said to be not weird in relation to its own social norms!. Yet, something cannot be both weird and not weird at the same time, for this defies the law of non-contradiction!.

Thus, to say that weird is something that exists outside of social norms meets with many problems and must be admitted as a bad definition!.

To throw out a definition I will say this: Weirdness is a feeling excited by a an altered quality of something being familiar to our perceptions!. So, we go to school everyday and most people have their "styles" of dressing!. One day one of your friends changes his style from "preppy" to "Gothic"!. We say this is weird because it is an unfamiliar perception of this person!. We are used to seeing him wear "preppy" clothes!. There is no standard for him to wear "preppy" clothes as opposed to "Gothic" styled clothes, but the "weirdness" comes from the quality of something being familiar to us suddenly being altered!. This means there has to be a break in somethings, say a friend (like the example above), consistent behavior, actions, mannerisms as they are presented to our senses!. Again the friend usually dressed as "preppy"!. The break came when the style was altered to "Gothic"!. "Weirdness" emerged!. For the same reason music seems weird when for most of our lives we listen to the same ol' stuff and suddenly a friend puts on something we've never heard of before!. Music seems to take on new qualities!. Immediately weirdness emerges!. Perhaps for this reason we say we must "acquire" tastes in food and music!. Maybe this means getting familiar to the newly presented qualities the make us feel weird!.

Here's the best part of that word !. !. !. it's main meaning is NOT an adjective!. Most dictionaries have as the primary definition something along the lines of "Fate, destiny, especially ill fortune!."

By that definition, "weird" cannot and does not exist in nature!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

What everyone is saying seems to be that 'weird' is only what society has decided is weird!. So I guess it doesn't really exist!. Just like good and evil might not exist, because we only like, perceive them!. Something that's weird to us might not be weird somewhere else, same with something that is supposed good or evil!.
So yeah!. I guess it doesn't exist in nature!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

WEIRD:
1 : of, relating to, or caused by witchcraft or the supernatural: magical!.
2 : of strange or extraordinary character: odd, fantastic!.

The second part of the definition does exist in nature!. It's called a 'platypus'!. And an even stranger one - the 'human being'!.

We call something or someone "weird" when our two realities cant be reconciled!. Its simply a describing word for unusual things, but something that is unusual might seem usual to somebody else, so does "weird" actually exist!? To yourself, yes!. Objectively, no!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ryan is so right!. Society has an "acceptance policy" for everything!. If it passes the policy, it's known as 'normal'!. If it doesn't, it's deemed as 'weird', 'freak' or any other damnation possible to describe it!. Sucks, huh!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Weird is anything that make someone look twice at something with an ooh factor!. The platypus, although I love it, is quite weird!. The poor thing doesn't really fit into any one group!. The echidna, for the same reason, is weird!. And let's not forget those crazy deep sea creatures!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Anything that isn't "normal" to people!.
It could be considered a figure of the imagination!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
