It is a way of spaeking, because it is a way of thinking!. The heart is usually associated with emotions and feelings deeply rooted inside us!. When we learn something by heart, though it is the mind that remembers it, it becomes so mush part of us that it is associated with our heart!. the mind is thought to analyse things and make us act rationally!. Learning by heart gives the diea that it reuires no rational thinking to get any information into out heads!. The 'by heart' may simply be a means of separating the use of logic and when we do not use it to register information!.

It may sound stupid and senseless, but we have come to accept it just as we say,'To fall in love' when it would be more logical to say 'To rise in love' because love is logically thought to be an elevating passion!.

Hope this helps!Www@QuestionHome@Com

By using the word "We" I assume your speaking of Western Cultures!. Not all Cultures place emotion on the heart!. The Japanese thought the stomach was the center of emotion, and soul!. The Chinese as well!. Hence the practice of Hari Kari where the cutting of ones stomach killed that persons soul!.

We now know the heart feels no emotion, it is the Brain!. "By heart" is a phrase commonly used to express deeply felt emotion!. This is furthered by religious references to the heart being the center of the soul!.

Be well all!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Words that we love, whether poems, musical lyrics, fictional works or other writings are easier to remember than boring words or meaningless words about things we do not know or are not interested in/by!. Words which we don't like give us "headaches"!. Words that please or otherwise amuse us, we remember "by heart"!.

it is those little idioms that distinguish one culture from another!. in my language we say "i will learn this poem outside and in" meaning I will fully learn it and when we want to say i will memorize something we say "i will learn this poem from the outside" I never really understood why we use such a silly expression even though Greek is one of the richest languages ever!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
