Chris McCandless seemed to follow a transcendentalist philosophy in the vein of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson, in which the spiritual place of the individual is much more important than that which is dictated by society!. He rid himself of the strictures placed on him by society--his money, his social obligations, even his very identity--and set off "Into the Wild", as it were, in search of himself!. He wanted a peaceful, simple and back-to-basics existence in which he could commune with nature and live off of the land, relying only on himself and Mother Nature, instead of anyone else!. It was an almost wild-man, hobo existence which he sought, hearkening back to our ancestors who existed in an era without all of our technology, and fast-paced-workaday lifestyles!.

I don't believe he was incompetent, not in the least!. He knew what he was getting into, and he knew it was dangerous, but he chased his dream anyway!. Yes, this holds an inherent degree of arrogance within in, but he was young and a dreamer!.!.!.some arrogance is to be expected!. Was he unprepared!? Surely he was, but he learned and he adapted, as we all do when thrust into a new situation!. Let's not forget that he did last five months out there on his own!.!.!.how many of us could honestly say we would be able to do that!? It was a simple mistake, an oversight, an error in judgment that killed him!.!.!.not the Alaskan wilderness!. And finally, was he an adventurer!?

Most certainly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
