Question: The 10 commandments never written down!?
In RCS (religious and cultural studies) we have to do a 5 paragraph piece of writing on which of the 10 commandments are relevant to us!. If you're a jew or a christian please refrain from telling me to "repent" or "seek god" or any thing like that!.!.!.only educated atheist answers please!
My dad (who taught logic, philosophy and life sciences at Middlesex university) said the 10 commandments could never of been written down because at the time they were supposedly written the jews didn't have a writing system, although he isn't entirely sure!.
Can anyone confirm this to me or give any more use full information because that would really help, i have one week till it is due!. Thanks!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Torah didn't achive final written form until around 500BCE after the Babylonian Exile!. Prior to then it was an oral tradition!.
So no the Ten Commandments were probably not written down before then!.
Solon the Lawgiver 600BCE wrote real ten commandments of which the later Hebrew version was derived;
1!. Trust good character more than promises!.
2!. Do not speak falsely!.
3!. Do good things!.
4!. Do not be hasty in making friends, but do not abandon them once made!.
5!. Learn to obey before you command!.
6!. When giving advice, do not recommend what is most pleasing, but what is most useful!.
7!. Make reason your supreme commander!.
8!. Do not associate with people who do bad things!.
9!. Honor the Gods!.
10!. Have regard for your parents!.

Actually, given the moral make up of mankind!. The ten commandments are pretty much written in the hearts of most people!. We, for some reason or another, will make up the rules as we see fit!. Sometimes, we make up more rules than just the ten commandments!.
The jews do have a writing system!. It is called hebrew!. A lot of the stuff was carried first by word of mouth, but if you do a scholarly study of the new testament and old testament, it is accepted by many both believers and even atheists who have studied the bible that certain books were authored by certain individuals!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
I think it is unlikely that they didn't have a writing system!. Of course at that time only the educated elite would have known how to read or write!. Moses presumably learned to read and write in Egypt when the Jews were enslaved there!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
