Question: Does the love of and search for wisdom result in depression in some philosophically-minded people!?
Ignorance seems bliss sometimes!. I honestly think ignorance can be the greatest happiness!. Why ponder and realise that 'soul mates' is likely just a made-up concept with no truth to it- just like the idea of a soul itself- when you can believe you've met your pre-ordained soul mate and share a lovely life with them!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

You might be confusing causes with effects!. Those who are happy have no reason to search: they have what they came for already!. Those who are chronically unhappy start searching for a way out and often, but not always, their quest leads them to inquire into the nature of human existence!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think it depends on the type of wisdom you gather!. Some wisdom contributes to make you a happier person as it teaches you to adapt better to the world and to understand it!. also, philosophy is about what you think you know but don't, it's about questioning certainties, etc!.!.!.!. And most of the times it formulates questions that leaves unanswered because many of it's questions about existence etc!.!.!. really can't be answered!. So, it really leaves you empty if you obcess with it!. IMO Wisdom is also rich life experience, not academic theory!. Philosophy doesn't allow you to know how the world works!. It processes only conceptual information about our existence and tries to make logic of it!. Philosophy is only a small branch of the academic wisdom there is out there!.!.!. Academic Wisdom is a small branch of the wisdom there is out there!. And wisdom is only one of the many contributes for happiness!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

First it leads to depression, then it leads to the best combat against depression one can hope for!. Understanding means control!. Although the concept of soul-mates may go out the window, your capacity for love can only be increased by empathy, and the sort of understanding and wisdom philosophy can give!.

I started believing in the needlessness of romantic love when I was 15!. Why fall in love!? It's just a waste of time, money and thought!. Sex and companionship are the only thing you'll get from a 'soul' mate!. You might also get children, but they're even worse than romantic love in terms of self-expenditure!. Further, sex and companionship arn't limited to those within romantic relationships; plenty of people are willing to have no-strings-attached sex, and I have my friends and family for companionship!.

However, philosophy can be an immensely frustrating subject; the fact that most things you can propose or imagine can be refuted is not a usually consoling one!. Mathematicians are much better off in this respect; they have rules and axioms, and their formulas have to be deductively true (usually)!.

I'd like to point out that being philosophically minded, is not, in itself, a sufficient cause of depression!. It may be that a large number of the philosophically inclined may be depressed, but not all are!. It would be like saying 'who will f*ck up the UK, left politicians or right politicians!?' Both can do it; that is, there is no logical impossibility that either party will screw the UK up!. And someone who has a philosophical way of thought will not necessarily become depressed!. And certainly, not every philosophical theory is one which proposes that things are bad; Leibniz proposed, for example, that all is for the best because God is a benevolent deity!. He was criticized for this however, notably by Voltaire!.

Alright!. So, what's the conclusion!? Unfortunately, the conclusion is uncertain; people who are philosophically inclined can be either depressed or nondepressed; and this is, ironically one of the main annoyances of philosophy - that conclusions are usually uncertain!Www@QuestionHome@Com

In ancient times Sophia!.!. the Gnostic Holy Spirit!.!.was worshipped and venerated hence the word philosophy!.!.Philo=Love!.Sophia=Wisdom!.Eac!.!.!. person sought their own salvation through Gnosis!.
Then Religion was invented and another teacher and master of wisdom called Yeshua was given the name Christ and the seeking for salvation became the commodity that we call Christianity in all it's forms today!.
In Islam there are parallels with Sufism and within Judaism we have the Kabbalah!.
And all these perceived fixed ideas of what the opinion of God is based on a number of books written by men who also laid down laws to further their grip on truth created the rise of all the philosophic debates and theories which are essentially trying to find the meaning of life!.!.!.which is the experience of detachment to illusion and suffering and ultimately the onset of death!.Wisdom offers freedom from that but it is not easy to find this!.
Some people think we are evolved apes and after death there is nothing!.
Some people think their God is the only God and they will be saved to spend eternity in a heaven!.
Some people think we return to the source of our pre-existence!.
Some people just don't think on the matter at all!.
There are many paths to wisdom but I think the only path is to go within!.
In ancient hermetic wisdom later applied to Gnosticism this passage for me sums it up!.
Knock on yourself as upon a door and walk upon yourself as a straight road!.For if you walk on the road,it is impossible for you to go astray!.Open the door for yourself so that you may know what is!.
Jesus taught us to Love your neighbour as yourself!.This is truly selfless and the search for wisdom is to awaken us from the unconscious state we are in!.For unless we know ourselves we are powerless to truth!.
Plato believed that we already have a soul mate!.Our higher self or daemon!.The illusion of love tends to make us look for happiness in another persons existence!.Yet one of us will stand over that ones grave and suffer the grief when they leave here!.
Your question indicates that your troubled and perhaps been delluded by an event with another who is not you and Haemrhoidhorror!.!.lovely name!.!.came from the same direction when he spoke/wrote of children because we come from something beyond our ken and our parents as we are parents are only caretakers to spirits in a material world!.!.apologies to Sting!.We're one but we're not the same!.
So I would persevere with your seeking for truth and remember do not look for it in another because your ego needs this and the Guru needs their ego feed!.This is why I distrust so called wisdom/spiritual books for all they do is replace religion!.Lokk around you at people thinking that life means happiness!.!.!.but from where!.Money!?Sex!?Love!?Power!?If you feel depressed then that means your feeling and you should be aware that the words you use are labels which project the feelings they describe!.it is all about the contiual changing process of existence!.Inhale!.Exhale!.We can all talk about Honey but unless we experience eating it how will we know what we are talking about!?
This also applies to God!.We essentially know nothing because we have forgotten ourselves and the reality is You,I,Her and Him are God and each to his /her own and as above so below in the present now because this is the most precious moment you have with yourself in your being!.Thats your true soul mate, who is here now and at the end when the real journey begins!.Find that now!.It's there!.It's that still voice that loves you within!.
I am that I am!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
