Is atheism comforting?

Question: Is atheism comforting!?

Folks, please don't say ugly things about each other, I just want to know what atheists out there feel about their belief system!. In general, do you feel that atheism (not necessarily compared to any belief in God) is a comforting way to think and lifestyle!? I have heard people- professing atheists- say both, that it is and is not, and I just read an article by HJ McCloskey saying that he felt atheism was a comfort to him!. What do you say!?

"Comfort" is not an expectation of atheism!. Atheism is simply the truth as we see it!. But understanding that atheism is reality and truth is a far more welcome basis for comfort than the false sense of security when one falls prey to the deception of a fictitious deity!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think it can be both!. For me, if I were an atheist it would be comforting to think that there was not a hell to go to and I could be as sinful as I wanted to!.
On the other hand, it would be discomforting to think "what if there was a hell and I was going!.
On the third hand (I am from Alabama) it would also be discomforting that I was in the world all alone without a God to depend on!. To think that there wasn't something bigger than me, and my life didn't serve a purpose would be extremely discomforting!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is comforting in a way!. It's comforting to be completely in control!. To know and explore your own values and morals without having to worry about what other people think you should believe, say or do!.

It's definitely comforting to not believe in hell!. I saw my friend's child the other day ask if his brother would go to hell for not believing in God!. He was really distressed!. I like not having to deal with that!.

It's great to learn and explore all ideas and opinions equally without being clouded by an organisation's or another person's ideas!. It truly is freedom and I wouldn't have it any other way!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think comforting is the right word,for me atheism set me free!.I have lost that guilty feeling of constantly fearing I am not good enough in god's eyes and will go to hell!.Now I live for myself and take responsibility of my own actions and guess what I'm a better person because I don't think constantly that god will forgive me if I hurt someones feelings!.I am much more care-full now not to hurt others!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I believe it is!.The world we live in is extremely complex and interesting!. The idea that our universe is all part of a much more simple, absolute and undramatic reality is quite disturbing to me!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Where knowledge ends, religion begins!. And I cannot live without knowledge, trying to understand how this funny world works!. With religion, I'm confined to the way they say it works!. So yes, in a way, it is comforting!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If my religion confused me, then I'll become one!. But I'd read my bible half way coz so many things else I pursue (such carrier etc), so 2B atheist would be d' last thing I do!.
