Question: Have you ever felt out of place because you took up philosophy!?

i dont understand why my family thinks that me studying philosophy is stupid, just because i no longer want to take part in religion and would rather not attend church, i dont tell them not to go, they can go, i dont understand why they think learning philosophy is a useless, philosophy has helped me think twice before taking suicide, they dont know how glad i am that i know so much more because of this!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The study in philosophy, psychology and even literature is notorious for making people think too much, and therefore rendering them introspective and useless for the good of practical uses of the world around!. This is not uncommon for people to scorn the ones who try to think, behave and talk philosopher of late ages, or to suspect them for pulling in heaviness during light and chirpy conversations, and spreading pessimistic thoughts and ideas!. Then there are many jokes about absent-minded philosopher that people tell to perk each other up mentally, as if trying to remind themselves of the very epitomes of laziness, inaction and boredom!.

However, being a fellow philosopher of some sort, I would not go so hard on philosophy, I would just like to suggest that you should seek in philosophy what you can be most practicable!. There are vital debate philosophy, as how to become a good human being, and, how philosophy could enhance life!? The list of the list of questions that relate to human condition is endless!. If philosophy has some good purpose, or some didactic end, then it cannot be anything but to serve life, to make life better, richer and happier both in its present content and its ultimate purpose in existence!.

The aspects of philosophy, therefore, aside scholarship, that deal with our current situation on earth, both in individual and collective capacities, are most popular in society, so much so that we often do not even realise that we are philosophising!. The issues of human rights and wrong, ethics, moral, values, and enduring matters of current political and humanitarian debates, we talk about hem all!.

The if you through your study of philosophy you become a person who is positively and actively interested in people around your, and in the world at large, then I am sure you will be able to convince your folks as how they should appreciate what you choose and think in general!.

that's wonderful to hear about your suicide!. and even putting that aside!. philosophy is a great subject to study which will make you intelligent as hell!. you will expand your vocabulary greatly through reading 17th and 18th century text, etc, written by geniuses and the elite, your writing skills and argumentation skills will also shoot through the roof because you need to write crystal clear in philosophy!. and i mean crystal!. it will help you think for yourself and examine situations in a logical manner (e!.g!. your whole religion thing)!. you family most likely does not understand what philosophy is or what it involves!. then what i described above is just mainly analytic philosophy!. then there is Continental which deals with subjects such as giving your life value, meaning, and worth (e!.g!. existentialism) etc!. trust me, at a dinner party it will be you who sound more impressive and be much more interesting to listen to than a science major!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think you have the question back to front!. Have you ever taken up philosophy because you felt out of place!? - quite often that is the reason for philosophy!. Those who search their soul for an answer to the meaning of existence find that they reach a place where that is the only thing they can do, and still remain level headed!.

When it comes down to it, the human existence is all about thinking!. You exist when you think, are your existence is what you think!.

The bible has many stories, and religion can give people some comfort!. However, that comfort is mainly for children, who need others to witness their existence as they do not exist fully yet!.

For those who philosophise, the church serves no purpose, and god's very existence may be questioned!. Sure it can be a warm place to come out of the rain or the snow, and there might be peaceful music, or silence in there compared to the noisy busy outside world!. Come to think of it, a church might actually be not a bad place just to sit and think!.

Nothing you do is stupid, if you can justify it to yourself!. Your opinion of yourself is what is important, and your "family" are helping you to realise that what they think allows you to question what you do but does not necessarily stop you doing it or encourage you to do it more!.

Philosophy is a very useful subject!. Because!.

It helps in individuals self-development in multidimensional areas!. It gives self confidence!. We know where we stand in this universe!. What we are and what we can do and achieve for us, for our family, for the society and for the nation!.

Please I do not say that in other areas people are not successful!. They are successful and more prosperous!. But when they are in cross roads, they just do not know what to do further!. They do not know what to do with their acquired wealth!. They cannot properly guide their children and surrounding!. Such people will be self centered and cannot help the society!. Keep studying!. You will learn that religion 'is' philosophy!.
Philosophers are deep thinkers!. Many church goers are not!.
There is nothing wrong with going to church!. The problem comes
when people don't think and don't know why they believe what they
believe!. Often the leaders don't read that much or that well!.
The non thinkers think they have the answer because of what the
pastor said!. The bible is a facinating book and there is much to learn
from it!. In your quest for knowledge, to neglect it it to throw the baby

It may sound silly, but only people who understand it, understand it!
Your family has it's own reasons for going to church, which they believe are correct!.
As you progress in your understanding of philosophy, you will see more and more reasons why their reasons are completely wrong!.
But you will never persuade them so it really is better not to try!.
At age 54, I am in a similar situation, but I thoroughly enjoy that I can do all the things that the religious fanatics pray for but don't get, and by the fact that they have no idea how far off the mark they are!

Every day of my life!. Philosophy can make for a very lonely place!. I hear exactly where you are coming from!. One day I realized that I might not have anything in common with the people around me!. It's like you see the forest but everyone else is so consumed with the trees that they can't even imagine what you see!. Why do you think your family hates you studying philosophy!? Well, what does logic do to the idea of god!? What does the knowledge of teaching a child false beliefs do to a parent!? They shun you valuing philosophy because you valuing philosophy is a threat to them; it bring up that knowledge that they taught their child badly and that god doesn't exist!. They call philosophy stupid because it makes them anxious, calling it stupid is an attempt to suppress that anxiety!.

Philosophy is a way of life,if they dont like you studying philosophy then thats because they are obsessed with god!.
