Descartes was using hyperbolic doubt to find a foundation to his philosophy!. He needed something absolutely certain to use as his foundation, so he begins to examine what usually is used as a basis for knowledge!. He finds that he can doubt what his sense's tell him and what his rationality and logic tell him, but he cannot doubt that he is doubting!. Hence, the existence of his doubting (or thinking) mind can be considered certain!. This was badly expressed as 'I think, therefore I am'!. Descartes rephrased this later, but the phrase stuck!.
Everything obviously doesn't think or at least it can't be demonstrated that everything thinks!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

You're confusing an "if" statement with an "if and only if" statement!. Here's what I mean!. Suppose that you were to say "all puppies are dogs"!. You'd be quite right in saying so: after all, they're a subgroup of dogs!. But what you're doing is going the other way: saying that all dogs are puppies!.

Descartes was part of an interesting branch of Continental philosophy which tried to prove what we might consider the basic assumptions of life, that we exist!. In my opinion, he failed, simply because he failed to consider the idea that we might only think we're thinking!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You are assuming that because a rock does not think that it is not!. However, even a rock has spirit in it!. There is no part of the universe that is not filled with spirit, all things in it are alive at some level, however not at our level, and there are certainly those who are above ours!.!.!.!.and see us as rocks!. Do not assume that because something is inanimate that it does not contain spirit!. And assembled, as a planet or a star, cannot have a higher consciousness!. I believe, this planet has a spirit, I call Mother Gaia!.!.!.it is the overall collective consciousness of this world, sometimes called Nature - we think of ourselves as being separate from Nature, but we ourselves are a part of Nature!. We are OF THIS WORLD ourselves, in terms of the body!.
In terms of the Spirit, we are not just of this world, but all worlds, and all universes and all that exists!.

You are twisting the argument!. The argument is a one way street!. "I am a human therefore I am a mammal" is correct, but "I am a mammal therefore I am a human" is not!. You are doing the same thing here, going from "I think therefore I am", to "I am therefore I think"!. So, no, the argument does not state that everything thinks!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

G You life is made of water and rock duct and elements from star explosions!. That means that, if you think, everything that is now you, and was once not you, and will be not you in the future, is for a time, part of your thinking!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!. Everything is crystal clear!. Water is more crystal clear and the rock is also clearly visible!. But that 'think' substance is invisible!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Since everything can't think, those who can't think can't be sure of their own existence or even any other existence!.!.!.!.!.!.!. that I believe is the central point of Descartes statement!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
