Plato was discoursing on his theory of ideas and, pointing to the cups on the table before him, said while there are many cups in the world, there is only one `idea' of a cup, and this cupness precedes the existence of all particular cups!.

"I can see the cup on the table," interupted Diogenes, "but I can't see the `cupness'"!.

"That's because you have the eyes to see the cup," said Plato, "but", tapping Diogenes' head with his finger, "you don't have the intellect with which to comprehend `cupness'!."

Diogenes walked up to the table, examined a cup and, looking inside, asked, "Is it empty!?"

Plato nodded!.

"Where is the `emptiness' which precedes this empty cup!?" asked Diogenes!.

Plato allowed himself a few moments to collect his thoughts, but Diogenes reached over and, tapping Plato's head with his finger, said "I think you will find here is the `emptiness'!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

I heard if you answer half full then your a optimist but if you answer half empty then your a pessimist!.!.!. but you could apply this to so many things, I suppose the creator of this famous question choose a cup that was half full of water because it was in front of them!.

You can call me either but I think that your answer is going to be a random choice and you cant judge them on those two things based on their choice of answer alone!.

Continued: Spiderman I was not implying that a new method should be used and I don't see how my answer was in any way discriminating or predjudice!. Could you please explain yourself a little more and maybe point out where in my answer that I've been that way!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depends on your sanna (perception)!. Our perceptions are shaped by our conditioning of our past, or 'karma'!. It's a bit like contact leads to feeling > perception!. The next time we see the cup, we consider it either full or empty based on our past thoughts and actions!.

Therefore it's neither half full nor half empty, because words are just words and aren't an ultimate reality, and either are our perceptions most of the time!. Eg!. you probably assume all language have the word "yes" in their vocabulary, but the Chinese don't!. I'm serious! Before you ask yourself "but then how do they!.!.!.", ask yourself whether we truly 'need' the word 'yes' to begin with!. Dogs don't, fish don't, and they manage to get by ok!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
