Armchair advice is advice that is given from someone who has no personal experience in what they're giving advice about!. Cultural anthropologists that went out into the field and analyzed tribes in Australia were accused of doing armchair anthropology because they were analyzing cultural practices from their own North American perspective - gathering 'evidence' and making conclusions based on what they'd learned from text books!. The flip side of armchair is to adopt an 'emic' perspective, which means gathering evidence and reaching conclusions based on talking to people who are directly involved (for example, finding that people do custom x based on going and talking to them and maybe living with them instead of just hiding behind a tree and observing or reading from a textbook)!.

So, in your friend's situation, the person that made the comment thinks that your friend lacks personal experience and therefore doesn't know what she's talking about (or maybe less extreme that your friend lacks perspective)!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

"Walking the walk" along with "talking the talk" is approximately the opposite of "armchair advice!."

A second perspective: a person who sees another's situation, but is willing to opine without individualized compassion!. Aka "not walking a mile in the other's moccasins!."

A third: someone who has "headucation" but not love for the other's situation!.

Ironically, about 80% of the time, such advice is good enough!. It's the 20% which comprise the bread and butter of trained counselors!.

Give 1-800-525-LOVE http://www!.klove!.com a call, 24/7, for trained, free, caring counseling!.

"When God Writes Your Love Story," Eric and Leslie Ludy,
"Soul Mates and Twin Flames," Elizabeth Clare Prophet, and
"For Women Only," Shaunti Feldhahn, are also good!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Advice you get from someone who knows it all yet knows nothing!.

You have most probably met them, for example, you just bought a new car, they'll be the first to say " you should have come to me first, I could have got you a better deal"!. Think of anyone you know!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
