Question: In layman's terms, what is philosophy!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Well, it literally means "The love of wisdom," but let's go a little bit down the rabbit hole!.!.!.

Back in the days of Socrates, the Ancient Greeks, took philosophy as anything that could be studied!. For example, biology, astronomy, and physics were all a part of philosophy!. It wasn't till Aristotle did the "Great Divide" (I'm pretty sure it was Aristotle, or maybe Plato) where science and philosophy parted ways!.

Now philosophy has a couple of jobs!. 1) To see what's morally correct!. Ethics is still a big topic in philosophy and will probably always be!. 2) Philosophers are taking language and mathematics to find the basis of the way we think!. Basically, philosophers are finding the foundation of our thought process using logic!. Typically this study is called Symbolic Logic!. Currently our most clear way of understanding comes from Modal Logic!.

I could give more examples of what philosophy is but that is a long list!. I find it funny how philosophy is difficult to define, so we have to give example of how it's used for it's meaning!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

1!. Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline!.
2!. Investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods!.

Take for example, Durk·heim in his pursuit for the reason behind suicide!.
