Question: Ok people are going to hate me for this quesiton but i just wanted peoples' opinion!? !?
ok so i have this new theory: that everyone is selfish (as much as i would rather not believe it) - bare with me
not selfish in the same sense - the idea that even wen we dont get paid to do a service to someone else, we do it becoz its on our co - the values we have been brought up with mean that without returning a favour or doing something for someone else we feel a void/guilt inside of us simply because of the environment we have been brought up wiht and our genes!?!? selfish in the sense that we do things for others (rekonised or not) to make us happy!? fill a void within ourselves!?
what do you guys rekon!?!?
please dont be harsh on me, just a judgement iv made!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes you are absolutely right!. So, we should just continue helping others and being good and kind and not expect recognition or anything special in return!. Our motives don't really matter!.
See the beauty and the good and everything and everyone, be peaceful and kind and loving, who cares about selfish or unselfish!?

It's relative and it's irrelevant!. The actions speak louder than the motives!.

But, I agree!. Everything that we do IS for ourselves, however good and helpful it may be!. We do it because we want to, we do it because we were taught to be like that, we do it because it makes us feel good!.

P!.s!. Being anonymously good feels the best!. No one knows you did it, no one thanks you!. Your ego gets stays out of the picture!. And it's Still selfish! But that's ok!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

you have a great point!.
I think that people have developed a void in their mindset, conveniently called guilt!. Historically speaking, ancient civilizations had been family based!. So, if someone, didn't help out, they would have this guilt that they didn't help their family!. As the people spread out, the guilt stayed with them!. Even today, we still have guilt!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Indeed yeah!.!.as even we agree or dis agree every human being is selfish in their own way though they say that they ain't and that they are social workers!.!.though they help others without any expectations in return a single word of gratitude (Thanks) gonna make them feel comfortable!.!.and that's selfishness!.!.cas it can apply on actions/words,emotions,etc!.!.

Cheers!Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, not everyone is selfish, you are what you choose to be!. I recommend you read some of the Dalai Lamas books, currently I'm reading Ethnics for the New Millennium, quiet a amazing read, (as are all of his other books) in which he covers selfishness in detail!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i like your theory, are we either doing something to justify our self perception as a nice person or perpetuating a programme in our thinking!.is this how u mean!?im not so sure about a void tho,but i like how u enquire into the nature of things!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well yeah!.!.!. these have been the crux of all spirituality!.!.!.

to reverse that selfish ego into a selfless all inclusive ego!.

It's not a new theory!. At your age, at your time, it is true!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Judge not lest ye be judgedWww@QuestionHome@Com

I agree cos i have thought that before and is still believing in this conceptWww@QuestionHome@Com

Well, of course all people are inherently selfish!. It's purely instinctual!. All people desire to survive yet have no express right to do so!. If it is true that we "deserve" nothing then we are selfish if we continue to exist in any system with limited resources!. We do things for others and for society to justify our own existence or our right to be here!. If this is true anyone that does not produce something usable to society or the environment should feel guilt!. Although, what can then be said of people unable to contribute to society in any meaningful way are they also selfish or are they just "breathing my air"!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree, by our very nature, everyone is selfish!. Sometimes, we don't always exhibit it, and are actually kind or generous!. But reality is we all are selfish beings!. Given the right circumstances, people will fight for themselves at all times!. Even when we do good, we are secretly hoping that one day we would recieve good as well!. The bottom line , is people are motivated by self, in one sense or another!. For example Even mothers, as genuine and right as they are, want the best for their kids, its still can be selfish at times, because its all about their kids and no one else!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

This depends on your idea of selfishness!.

I don't believe in your idea!. Because when unselfish people commit selfless acts, let's say help an older woman cross the street: the brain recognises this:

- 'An older woman!. I'm going to help her cross the street!.'!.

This is simply a judgement!. If the world works as you say then people see such a situation and they react like this:

-'An old woman crossing the street!. I'm going to help her because it will make me feel good'!.

It is all about the purpose!. Sure, you may feel good afterwards, but the intent is to commit an act for the benefit of another!. The feel-good sensation simply comes along after the act of selflessness!. It is not the motivation to commit it!.

Nice try, though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
