He; I take it your Philosophy teacher is a male!.
He just might find this answer entertaining:
~~~~~
The world is a dream!.
The world is filled with illusion!.
Here there is singing and dancing!.
The world we have been born into is a marketplace!.
People will not understand this!
~~~~~
One must have clarity if one is to remain awake!.
If one looses this clarity, they once again fall into the dream!.
One must acquire "Wisdom", then the dream and the illusion will no longer be with them!.
One will remain awake and observe both, the world of the 'seen' and the world of the 'unseen'!.

Personally, this is what I think ---

When we dream, we communicate with ourselves, exclusively!. All the people and objects we interact with in our dreams are merely projections of our own mind!. The whole mind communicates with the very same whole mind!. In theory, when we are awake, we interact with real people and other mind-independent objects!. But of course, proving all this is the difficult part!. It's a great question, and I'm glad to see we have some great answers as well!. I especially like WillRoger's answer!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depends on how you think!. Some philosophers, namely Descartes and his dream theory, would argue that you can't tell the difference!. That was one of his major arguements for how our perception of reality is false!. Another chinese philosopher also had a quote that I will never forget!. "I once dreamt that I was a butterfly flittering around the sky!. Then I awoke!. Now I have to wonder: am I a man that dreamt of being a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming that I am a man!."

The different way to go, is to argue alongside David Hume!. He argued that you can tell the difference because dreams are chaotic and make no sense!. When you are dreaming, you can't tell you are dreaming!. You don't even think about it!. But when you are awake, you can at least tell that you are not dreaming or unconscious or whatever!. also science is in favor of this line of thinking!. We now have the power to see brain activity!. All of us have three states of living!.

One is wakeful state!. It is also called conscious state when we are aware of what is happening!. This is outward!. We are aware of the body and mind and with their help we are aware of the physical world as well as our thoughts and emotions!.

Second is Dream state, which is also called semi-conscious state!. This is inward conscious!. It is unreal and dreams have no basis!. It cannot be relied upon!. In this state, we are unaware of the body but have identified with the mind with the help of which a whole new world of things and beings is projected!. The dream state is as real with respect to the dreamer as the waking state is with respect to the waker!.

Third state is called deep sleep state, about which you have not asked anything!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There are many 'schools of thought' that maintain that we create 100% of our "reality", and therefore ALL is an illusion that we are creating, whether it is a 'dream state' or not, and the "true" reality in unknowable!. We then are only our subjective perceptions!.

The I/thou, or self/other, relationship of consciousness is a fascinating concept to explore, and unresolvable within the present state of our 'collective consciousness', (which often seems more like collective UNconsciousness) Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hello:

Well science seems to think that our brain doesn't know the difference!.!.!.so there is that!.

However I do not remember my dreams but I do remember being awake!.!.!.I think!. Really there may be no difference to the brain but in the awake reality we share it with other people while our asleep reality we likely exist in that one by ourselves!. Since we have the physical bodies that need food and exercise and so on!.!.!.I would call that the real reality!.

um!.!.!.when we are asleep our body regenerates the rest of our body!.!.!.I don't see why our brain wouldn't just fire various synapses just to keep them in good working order!. A thought I just had now!.!.!.it could be a process of the brain we don't understand!.!.!.it can be our brain playing without the need to constantly be thinking about the here and now!.!.!.

But yes, there is a distinction and its pretty much between real reality and whats in the brain!.!.!.whatever that is!.

I hope this helps

Most of my night dreams seem to be surrounded in a fog, as if the entire world in my dream was a bubble with nothing beyond it!. A pocket universe where only the things within reach are real!. Very rarely can I see any distance away, even in my flying dreams I seem to have limits as to how high I can fly and how far!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Delta brainwave pattern!.
Which means you can be awake and in a dream though it's hard to do because you can normally only disconnect from senses while asleep and your senses force you out of that brainwave pattern just through resonance!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When I'm dreaming, I'm not really self-aware!. also, reality is not very!.!.!.real!. Actually, many of my dreams would make the Twilight Zone look boringly normal by comparison!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
