Question: Is Nudity Art or Pornography!?
This is on one of the posters of the Debate Club in my school, apparently, it's to grab the students attention so they would want to join the club!.

I think the question depends on the person viewing it, his or her perspective!.

If you got time, craft both sides of the argument then have your stand!. Thanks and have fun answering!Www@QuestionHome@Com

In some cultures, nudity is always pornography, but in the Western tradition, it depends on the intent of the work!. Is the artists intention to create a work for aesthetic appreciation!? If so, it's art!. Is the "artists" intention to stimulate sexuality!? if so, it's porn!. But you can't separate the two completely!. It's not like art precludes any hint of sex!. Many legitimate works of art have an erotic component -- Goya's "Maja, "Manet's "Olympia," "Venus of Urbino," Ingres "Odalesgue", and "Turkish Harem," etc!. But they're not pornography because the erotic component is (in my opinion), incidental to theiractuall aesthetic purpose!. Questions of taste also enter into it!. Just because a work is artistic doesn't mean it's appropriate for everyone!. Robert Maplethorpe's S&M images might have been created for aesthetic reasons (by stretching the definition), but IMHO, they're obscene!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

It simply depends on the context in which the nudity is portrayed!.
IE: If there was a photo of an unclothed woman lying in a beautiful garden of flowers, I would not consider in pornography!. However, if there was a photo of two people nude and in position in a garden, yes, I'd consider it pornography!.

also, who is to say that pornography isn't art!? Www@QuestionHome@Com

you're right, it's a matter of perspective, but I think if it's intended to be crass then it's porn, and if it's depicted more subtly, with more thought given to the overall artistic composition of the piece, then it is art!. slight difference, and everyone will have a different opinion about what constitutes "subtle"!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depends on who is doing the looking and what their thinking is when seeing it!.

It also depends on the painting/picture or how ever it was intended!. I mean a woman posing in a provocative way to me would be porn!. A woman posing maybe just laying with her child would be nudity/art!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

people can turn a beautiful picture into something cheap and nasty
i think nudity is art when everything is proportional
nothing 2 big or small
same with the pose
when i watch america's next to model
tyra always tells the porn models 2b more classy
i drew nudity once and i thought it was very sophisticated
then my friend said
y is she naked
that's disgusting Www@QuestionHome@Com

You can't really answer that question definitively!.

Basically if its primary aim is to arouse then it is probably pornography!. If it appears to be deliberately thought provoking and unusual it is probably art!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

The line between art and porn is drawn based on the perspective of the viewer, as you already indicated!. I will give a different answer than you, and everyone else will have similar differing views!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You can't draw a 'hard' line, its a continuum, a spectrum!. There are an infinite number of possible division lines and each person has to draw their own line!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
