Logically speaking no one can be compelled to prove a negative!. We can only be asked to prove something based on what exists!. It is a logical fallacy to ask someone to prove that something does not exist, since we can only make conclusions based on reality (i!.e!. the evidence that is present)!.

For example, a common argument of people who believe in the existence of a god is that "no one can prove that a god does not exist!." This is opposed to asking "can you prove a god does exist!." The latter question is legitimate because it is asking whether the existence of a god is consistent with our understanding of what exists (i!.e!. evidence)!. The former question would be asking if the existence of a god is consistent with what does not exist, which is obviously a totally bogus request!. If we believe that it is legitimate to make claims based on non-existence (i!.e!. lack of evidence), we could convict people in a court of law based on lack of evidence!. Thus, objectively speaking, non-existence can never be used as a form of evidence to support any claim!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Evidence is largely situational, and almost always open to interpretation!. Is absence of evidence evidence of absence!? Nope, not by me, because you can never know when the evidence that has for so long been absent will be found! Or not found! It's an odd question, and this has been an odd answer!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In specific cases where the evidence is clearly expected to be there but isn't, then yes!.

This is normally considered a logical fallacy, but there are cases when this type of thinking is valid!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
