Well, we know things like that because we have definitions for them!. But I see what you mean by your question!. Can we trust our senses!? I think we can, to a certain extent!. That's kind of a prerequisite for living!. I mean, our senses are the only way we have of interacting with the world!. Observations are made more reliable with instruments and things like that, but if you get really basic with the argument then you could say that we're all seeing the same thing in the same warped way!.

But if we aren't seeing things exactly as they are because of a fault in our senses, does it matter!? We can still construct cause-effect relationships with things and ideas that will probably be repeatable!. That's the main utility of the senses anyway!. Not to mention, it's the best we (or any entity with senses, for that matter) can do!.

One could fork off from that point and start to question the assumption of the scientific method, the idea that we can predict the future with past observations!. But we can make short work of that doubt as well!. If our predictions are reasonably right, we may have learned something useful!. If not, then we have learned nothing of value and we'll know it!.

Make one angry, then belittle the dickens out of it, then give it unconditional love, then bolster it's ego with positive affirmation!.

I think you'll see four very different sides to that square!.

Steven_D is a rigid, unhappy man!. He needs to refrain from defining things with absolutes and then stating his myopic opinions as fact!. You're not setting a good example for future generations who may have more than just the standard issue of senses!. That pineal gland is bound to kick in some day!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is not the square with four sides, it is the sides which come together, four of them of course, to make a square!.

A square is the creation of four congruent sides!. We first defined sides!. After defining what a side exactly is, we were able to create a figure with four congruent sides and call it The Square!.

These are not our senses, but these are things we create to form the basis of communication and understanding between human beings!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you can't trust your senses, you are not a conscious being!. If you are not a conscious being, then what is the point of living!? You know a square has four sides because you see it!. Of course, square is a label given to an shape and can be changed!. But if that square doesn't exist, then neither do you!. A is A!. Man is Man!. Existence exists!. So live!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

A "square" is, by definition, a figure with four equal sides and right angle corners!. The Greeks got this down a long time ago!. You can call it an avocado, if you want to, but the rest of us will think you're talking about fruit!.
As to the deeper question, can we trust our senses!.!.!.!.!.well, we don't really have a choice!.!.!.they're all we've got to go on!.
