Question: "Peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be attained through understanding!." !?
-Quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson
do you think this is true and if so, not only in the scheme of peace and war, but for internal struggles as well!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Violence can sometimes bring about peace, as when you defeat and destroy an enemy in battle and thereby bring peace to the land!. It is pointless trying to get barbarians to 'understand'!. They only understand one thing: who is stronger !? Right and wrong has no place in their vocabulary!. But such peace may not be long-lasting as the defeated enemy may gather strenth and again return to create more havoc!. But generally it is true!. Long-lasting peace cannot be achieved through violence!. Understanding is needed!. As far as internal struggles are concerned, the saying is 100% true!. Internal conflict can only be resolved through right understanding and right conduct!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As has been well demonstrated throughout history, violence only begets more violence!.

Peace is achievable and sustainable if it is reached through understanding and perpetuated through mutual cooperation that is of benefit to all!.

His Holiness, the Dalai Lamm, in his work "Ethics for a New Millennium" has spoken correctly about the same ideal!. It is a work well worth reading and discussing!.

May it be well with you!.

ADDITION:

To chose a "best answer" perhaps it would be wise to read all answers twice while selecting those that ring true to your own beliefs or to the ones that gave you an opposing view you had not preveiously considered!.

After having narrowed the running, read the finalist again and select the answer that you feel best spoke to the isse/question you raised!.

Select that answer and award it either no stars or up to five stars depending upon how well you opine the answer fit your original post!.

You may also include a comment to the person who received you choice, and/or to all who answered in general!.

As those who are truly trying to share what they feel they have learned will not be concerned about the "ten points", perhaps you, too, should not be overly concerned!.

If you do not wish to choose, allow the time frame of the post to expire and Yahoo will select for you, however, they often make what appears to be very odd choices!.

May you be well!.

ADDITION:

there is the "art of peace", aikido as taught by O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba!.

In that art, one uses the energies of ones attacker to end the attack and such is done without the necessity of destroying ones attacker!.

This is not truly a "violent" form of self defense but rather a harmonizing of "ki" or energies which can prove to be a moment of satori or enlightenment for the both the attacker and the one who was begin attacked!.

Soatome Sensei has written several books about aikido that explain such in English better than this one is able to do so!. He was a student of O'Sensei and is currently teaching/instructing in the United States (Washington D!.C!. area if this one understood correctly)!.

Stevens Sensei also has written extensively about aikido, its philosphy and practice and about the founder, Ueshiba O'Sensei!.

Perhaps such is worth investigating by those who responded and especially by those with prior military background!.

May it be well with all!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As an ex-soldier I know that lasting peace comes through dialogue and acceptance!. Enforced peace is simply a lull between fights!.

It is however, necessary to be capable of violence in self defence as sometimes this is the only alternative to eradication by aggressors!. If the Jews had had the means should they have fought the Germans in WW11!? Would history condemn them!? I think not!.

On a local level, I will not be preaching love and goodwill to muggers and rapists either!. I will most likely smite them righteously with a swift size ten to the soft parts of their anatomy!. Violence is never the best option, but it IS an option!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Is self defense considered violence!? Even if you have an understanding of your aggressor, what if he doesn't have an understanding of you or himself!? If you defend yourself or virtues against his attacks is that the same thing as violence!? It may be violent!. So if party A has the understanding but party B does not and continues to attack party A if party A does not defend it's self then isn't party A participating in the violence!. Keeping in mind that party A has the understanding or enlightenment!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Violence is due to lack of understanding or knowledge of a thing or situation!. Violence is an uncontrolled emotional outburst with an aim to cause injury!. Any violent action brings destructive reactions which are contrary to peace!. Peace is born when there are no more conflicts!. Once a through understanding of a subject or an incidence is reached the outcome is peace!. This is equally true for both inward and outward struggles!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Peace is the way!.!.!.not a situation !. It is a state of mind as well as the atmosphere !.Outer peace is achieved through understanding between different minds !. Inner peace is achieved through understanding between the two sides of our own mind - negative side and positive side ; good side and bad side !.understanding is the only way for any kind of peace !.
Love and peace to all !.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Nice sentiment, but history disagrees!.

Peace is achieved when your enemies are afraid to attack you!.

Those who desire peace should prepare for war!.

The longest, most peaceful period of European history was the Cold war, when both sides were terrified of the implications of attacking the other!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It works good in theory but I have found that trying to use peace to stop some psycho from beating the hell out of you or a loved one is a load of crap!.
Same with some other country attacking us we can't just have group prayer and hope for the best!. Sometimes the course of action is to draw the line in the sand and tell the bad guys to back off!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

G understanding is not enough!. It is a start to overcoming priming!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i don't know how anyone could possibly argue with that logic!.!.!.
