Question: What do you consider to be mankind's greatest discovery!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Well, we didn't discover the wheel, the printing press or the internet, we invented them!. And we didn't discover food or sex either!. Our pre-human ancestors did!.

The discovery of electricity made so many other inventions possible!. The theory of evolution is pretty darn important too!. Not practically but philosophically!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There have been three instances in the history of human kind when human mind was demoted, altered, and its fundamental beliefs changed for good, three epoch making times in the history of human civilisation when processes of scientific discovery led up to revolution in thought, i!.e!. science alone has caused three major shocks to the mind!. I call them shocking discoveries!. And they are:

The first Shokcing by Nicolaus Copernicus, the first astronomer to formulate a scientifically based heliocentric cosmology that displaced the Earth from the center of the universe!. His epochal book, On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres, is often regarded as the starting point of modern astronomy and the defining epiphany that began the Scientific Revolution!.

Before this discovery the Earth was believed to be the centre of the universe, thus the term heliocebtric!. Galileo Galilei, an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher, played a major role in this scientific revolution and through his astronomical observations provide the support for Copernicanism!.

The second shock by Charles Darwin an English naturalist, who showed that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors through the process he called natural selection a theory that came to become the basis of modern evolutionary theory!.

The theory of evolution by Charles Darwin was a massive blow to the the theory of divine creation according to which all thigns were brought to exitence thourgh the act of creation some six thougsand years ago!.

And finally the third by Sigmund Freud, an Austrian psychiatrist who founded the psychoanalytic school of psychology, best known for his theories of the unconscious mind as his most significant contribution to thought!. Freud called dreams the "royal road to the unconscious", meaning that the logic of dreams is the logic of the unconscious mind!.

Before Sigmund Frued it was believed that human mind is based upon reason, but with this new interpretation it proved shocking to know that human mind in its entirety rests upon som dark and unfathosmable ocean called unconscious, the place of wild instanctive foreces and darkes of desires!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
