Question: The dollar paradox! test your luck!!?
Three men rent a hotel room for $30!. All three men chip in $10!.00!. The hotel manager realizes he has overcharged the men, the room only costs $25, so he immediately sends the bellhop to return the $5!.
The bellhop pockets $2 as a tip and returns $1 to each man!.
So, each man has now paid $9 towards the room, $9 x 3 = $27 + $2 tip to the bellhop is $29!.

WHERE IS THE EXTRA DOLLAR!?

The confusion comes from changing the order of math!.

The room was 30 but now 25!. So 30 minus 3 = 27 then minus 2 for the bellhop = 25!. problem solved!.

or

the room is 25!. each man was overcharged so returning 3 dollars = 28 + 2 to the bellhop = 30

Just a trick of math when you combine certain operations in the wrong way!.

Edit -- You are putting things in the wrong order is the only reason the question seems tricky!. Each man paid 10 so 10+10+10 =30, manager returns 5 = 25 now it's a question of how the five is broken up!. 5 -2 to the bellhop -3 to the men = 0

In math I am sure you remember there was always an order of operations to all math questions!. 2+ 2 *5 = 12 but (2+2)*5 =20 because the order of operations is performed differently!. This verbal trick ignores the order of operations!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Thank You
This is your receipt

$ 30 Cash tendered
$-25 Room
--------------------------------
$ 5 Change
$-2 Tip
--------------------------------
$ 3 Cash Returned
$-3 Men @ 1$ X 3
--------------------------------
$ 0

No mistake!.
Watch what you add and subtract from
Watch those add and subtract signs when doing arithmetics

Each men paid $9 X 3 = $27
total $27 = $25 room + $2 tip

Or

Each men paid $10 X 3= $30
Total $30 = $25 room + $2 tip + $3 changeWww@QuestionHome@Com

the extra dollar is coming from the 33 cents surplus from each of the three men who are supposed to chip in $ 8!.33 only to make up 25 dollars but instead they paid the even amount of 9 dollars each!.
,33 by 3 is !.99
so the actual missing money is !.99Www@QuestionHome@Com

Simple math demonstrates what readers intuitively sense, that there is no missing money!. The sum of their payments is $25 in the till, $2 in the bellhop's pocket (totaling $27), plus the $3 in change that the guests now have, which brings the total up to $30!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

9+3 = 27

27 - 2 tip = 25 which is the rate of the room

since you gave back a dollar to each of the men, and the bellhop took a tip you need to subtract not add

your question is misleading lolWww@QuestionHome@Com

The room divided by 3
25/ 3 = 8!.33333333!.!.!.
the tip divided by three
2/3 = !.6666666!.!.!.
the total: 8!.99999
Even with the tip nobody paid 9 dollars!.
Where'd the !.111111 cents go!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Your question is incorrect or I would say answer lies in question!. why say 9*3, each of them gave (28/3)-1 dollarsWww@QuestionHome@Com

The trick is that you must SUBTRACT the $2 from the $27 which would give you $25!. Then you ADD the $2 plus the $3 and get the original $30!.

No missing dollar!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Room=$25
3 men= $8!.33 each
tip= $2
total=$27Www@QuestionHome@Com
