By self aware I'm going to assume you mean as defined by the mirror test where researchers put a dot on an animals face where they can't see except through a window and see if the animal reacts to the spot or thinks it is another animal!. Intelligence is a little harder to define!. How about we define it as the use of tools!?

To my knowledge all animals that use tools are self aware: chimps, gorillas, orangutans, bonobos, elephants, dolphins!. Other creatures like dogs which are self aware don't use tools, but as I said I believe all observable information points to a need for self awareness to use tools!.

I suppose a creature could DISPLAY intelligence, but not actually be intelligent or self aware!. However I personally would not define an animal that tries fighting its own reflection as intelligent so despite me not being a animal psychologist I'm going to say intelligence and self awareness go nearly hand in hand!.

*edit*
Skatta made a good point!. Some clearly unintelligent and not self aware animals can be trained giving them the appearance of intelligence!. Like I said before some animals could DISPLAY intelligence but not be self aware!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Intelligence and awareness have no relation to one another!. In general terms, one can know without being aware of knowing and one can be aware without knowing one is aware!.

However more specifically, one can know a thing without being aware of anything else, and one can be aware of everything without knowing anything about the things one is aware of!.

So, sorry, a short answer to your question is: yes, though displaying intelligence is not the same thing as being intelligent!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well, first we have to define intelligence !.!.!. because i have met people that i think have an IQ comparable to a JAR of MAYO!.!.!. and they seem preatty self aware to me!.!.!.
you ask them where they are!.!. they'll reply "right here!" even though they have no idea where thats at!

then again !.!.!. define self aware!? i thought i was self aware till i began to seek out the purpose of my existance here! is that your idea self aware!?

i personally think, a creature can be called intelligent, if it has the capacity to evolve at some point!. from the simplest bacteria, to the most complex person!. i also believe that at any level, you will find creatures that are self aware, and all the way up even people who are not!.!.!.

but remember !.!. the capacity to evolve and adapt!. That is the key to defining intelligence, and self awareness is found in all creatures who respond to their environment!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

weird question!. When I try to answer this I think about it using an AI example!. Say that we create AI and that it can learn by itself and we don't have to feed it the information!. It would have intelligence, but I think at the start it would not be self aware!. It would continue its objectives until it has learned to think about itself merely by accident through trying to gain more more knowledge to become more efficient (because it says to in its programming)!. Once this occurs it will become self aware, but previously it was an intelligent entity that did not think about itself as existing, it came through learning!.

I'm unsure if you are talking about a being that isn't just able to learn, but has already made many memories, and is "Intelligent" (or smart)!. If this is the case, then my baby example won't qualify, and neither will the robot scenario!. The only way I could see this happening would be an animal or alien (since we have no intelligent animals on earth besides humans), that is not conscious, but can learn and solve complex problems!. It would still be instinct because the thoughts aren't being understood or rationalized, just done by the brain!. We do this when we give the answer to 7x8 = 56!. We have the answer memorized and our brain just gives us the info without actually redoing the problem!. How probable this scenario is, I don't know!. I would think that it could happen, because I believe that the only reason humans are not like this is because of our soul, which gives us a consciousness which we use to become self aware!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i think an intelligent creature must be self aware!. but people say dogs are intelligent!. whereas i think they are neither intelligent nor self aware!. i think they are only conditionable, so trainable, easily mistaken for intelligent!.

i think self awareness is caused by intelligence, they are caused by the same thing!. co-dependent!.
