Question: Does anyone think that Science will, in the end, be our ultimate doom!?
The "CERN" project kind of made me think about this!.

It may be!. Our own knowledge can destroy us!. Have we forgotten the atomic and hydrogen bombs!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Science will be our salvation; if we meet our doom it will be from ignorance!. Ironically, the CERN project (LHC supercollider) is a perfect example of this!.

There is really no risk to worry about with the LHC!. The energies involved in the collisions are still only a tiny fraction of those found in nature, including cosmic rays slamming into our atmosphere!. Thus, if a high-energy collision was going to destroy our world through the creation of a black hole or strange matter, it would have happened eons ago before life even arose!. Indeed, most objects in the universe should have been converted into black holes or strange matter by now if that were the case!.

So on the one side you have that candle in the dark, science, lighting the way to knowledge and progress!. On the other are the forces against knowledge: ignorance and fear, each reinforcing the other!. Your concern about the LHC, groundless though it is, is fairly widespread!. So too are fears about the world ending in 2012 when the Mayan calendar ends its current cycle, and fears about Y2K being the fall of civilization 9 years ago!. In all these cases, knowledge and truth could have avoided all the hysteria and worry, if only most people had stopped to critically examine the issue!. (And it doesn't help that the media is always willing to give very disproportionate time to the fearmongers!.)

So, don't worry about the LHC, you're infinitely more likely to be struck by lightning 10 times in the next 10 minutes!. Besides, they've already powered the thing up, and as far as I can tell we're still here!.!.!.!.

NO

I guy I went to school with hung himself and he was all into the hype about CERN!.
I actually think it was related, but only because he didn't have the intelegence to understand that what the CERN project is replicating happens on a larger scale every second of the day!. they are only doing it so they can document and observe it!.

Don't do anything stupid mate!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

nope, i think only positive things can come from knowledge and science!.

what might be our doom, is what we end up using what we discovered using science!. if we decided how to implement science scientifically we would be safe i think!. but we don't!. free market decides what gets produced!. what is profitable vs non-profitable!. that's the danger i think!.

CERN project will only help us!. how!? i don't know, but there's one way to find out!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Seems like we invent the ways to destroy ourselves at the time when we are barely mature enough not to!. Barely, Being an optimist, however- it may be our ultimate destiny: to become immortal creators of life!. Theoretically we will be able to populate new worlds if not one day to create them even!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I suggest you invest all your faith in ignorance!.
And good luck with that!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
