I usually treat this as purely a logical puzzle, but the question crops up so often that I thought I’d dig a bit deeper!.

Strangely, there is Biblical authority for a rock that cannot be moved: see 1 Chronicles 16:30, Psalm 93:1 and I’m sure I saw it somewhere in Joshua years ago!.

In all of these – through there are variations in translations – the earth itself is fixed fast so that it cannot be moved!.

Even stranger, there does not appear to be (clear) Biblical authority for God being omnipotent!.

So biblically, God is not omnipotent and can’t move an immovable rock!.

Of course, the scientifically minded will point out, with Galileo, that it does move! Which suggests either that God can move it (whether He is omnipotent or not) or that the Bible has an error in it!.

On the other hand, this is probably not what the Bible meant!. At the time the ‘world’ or ‘earth’ was thought to be all that there was of the non-heavenly universe!. A more modern interpretation would be ‘can an omnipotent God move the universe somewhere else!?’!. Both Christians and scientists can agree on the answer to that one: no He can’t, because there is nowhere else to move it to, since the universe itself contains all the places that exist – that is what universe means!.

Taking it instead as the logical puzzle it is meant (I think) to be: if there is an omnipotent God there can’t be an immovable rock, and if there is an immovable rock there can’t be an omnipotent God!. So the question contradicts itself – so it is no wonder that there is no sane answer!.

for the sake of the argument we will pretend we know what a god is!. (do you!?)
A powerful god means no power is left for anything else, so no rocks are possible for a powerful god!.
if the question means the god can do anything it wants, creating an unmoveable rock is impossible, because everything in our universe is moving, so the rock will move also, as will the god!.

This is a version of the "What happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object" question isn't it!? Logically, the 2 things cannot exist in the same universe, and it's the same with your question: an unmovable rock could not exist in a universe with an all-powerful god, as by definition, the god would be able to do anything, including move the rock!. Ever think people like us possibly don't get out enough!.!.!.!.!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Unmoveable by whom!? Man or God!? it sounds like you are trying to open a deep faith based debate however you missed a little with your wording!. If the omnipatent being created the rock than of course he, she ,it would be able to move thier creation!. No matter if they used thier omnipotent's or tools created from thier power!. If you ask if Man can move the rock!? depends on if man is allowed to destroy the rock in order to move it!.!.!. And if man belives in the power of God than Yes, man can move mountians!. If God exists, maybe it can create an unmoveable rock!. If it was all powerful though, it would be able to make the rock moveable again if it ever wanted to move it, or just make it not exist anymore, or not so much move it as make it start existing somewhere else instead!.

Not that there is a God of course!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

sure!. why not!?

this is a real answer!.!.!.

the part can never entirely describe the whole!.!.!.

think of yourself as a bicycle pedal,
the world as you know it as the bicycle,
and that is all you can relate to!.

you cannot understand the path that bicycle is on,
or the unmovable rock that it must go around

Hmmm, a paradox!. The problem with paradoxes is that they usually contain no reasonable answer!. They are normally used to try to prove a point!. So what it your point exactly!? Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Question is why would he/she do that!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
