Allow me to paste some better experts than myself on this subject!.

"If there is a philosophical Atlas who carries the whole of Western civilization on his shoulders, it is Aristotle!. He has been opposed, misinterpreted, misrepresented, and—like an axiom—used by his enemies in the very act of denying him!. Whatever intellectual progress men have achieved rests on his achievements!.

"There is only one fundamental issue in philosophy: the cognitive efficacy of man’s mind!. The conflict of Aristotle versus Plato is the conflict of reason versus mysticism!. It was Plato who formulated most of philosophy’s basic questions—and doubts!. It was Aristotle who laid the foundation for most of the answers!. Thereafter, the record of their duel is the record of man’s long struggle to deny and surrender or to uphold and assert the validity of his particular mode of consciousness!."
Review of J!.H!. Randall’s Aristotle,
The Objectivist Newsletter, May 1963; Ayn Rand

This means that Western philosophy is defined by 2 men, Aristotle and Plato!. Both of them were incorporated into Christianity, at very different times in history, but in part it was that use of their ideas in religion that made Christianity the religion of the West!.

So Western Philosophy is
1!. the argument between Aristotle and Plato;
2!. combined with Christianity!.

That is really no answer to your question unless you understand Aristotle, Plato, and Christianity, but it is the most accurate answer!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Western Philosophy is principally the philosophy of Europe, Britain and America which was inherited from the Greeks!. It is quite important to know that Islamic philosophy is closely linked, in that it stems from Aristotlean philosophy, whereas European philosophy (up until the 12th century when the two cultures met through Spain) followed, roughly, the thought of Plato!.
Characteristic philosophers who moulded the western school could be selected from:
Continental: Descartes, Leibniz, Spinoza, Kant!.!.!.
British: Bacon, Locke, Berkeley, Hume!.!.!.
American: James, Pierce, Searle, Chomsky!.!.!.
The main differenence of note between Easten and Western philosophy is the West's historical emphasis on logic and rationality (especially the Continental Philosophers) and also the inheritance of a Platonic "dualism" whereas Eastern philosophy has tended to be more all-including and "holistic"!.
Hope that helps!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The philosophy of the West is one of greed!. Preached much are the words of the former philosophers!. Ignored completely are works of the former philosophers!. Money is the only goal, money is our only desire, money money money!. The whole planet is being turned into money, so a fantastically small number of people can be so unbelievably wealthy that it is truly beyond imagination!. Religion and the TV keep us all oblivious to what is being done to the planet to make these people rich!. Western philosophy laughs at infinitely superior economic models!. The enslavement of the masses is the result of Western philosophy!. We are only free because they tell us we are free; the truth is not so good!. Of course, the intellects will only give you the bits that you like!. You have choice, are free to choose!. (So long as you can afford) There is no good comes from Western philosophy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
