Avoiding something is self-preservation, if we attacked everything head on the world would be a bigger battlefield than it already is!. Time changes everything, conflict for conflicts sake is futile!. Some people thrive on conflict, it makes them feel alive!. I'd say to them, go bungie jumping, at the very least you can only hurt yourself!.

I know people who care deeply for others but cannot help them personally without it affecting themselves, so they try to be supportive from a distance!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Trying to avoid war (for example) is not cowardice!. One is not a coward for not wanting such things!.
I don't see how we can "try" not to care about something!. You either care about it or you don't!. Perhaps one doesn't know one would care about X, but with a proper introduction learns that she or he does care!. But how can you willing not care about something you care about!?
