Sound waves are simply vibrations, and they are only vibrations until an auditory sensory organ can convert them from simple vibrations to actual sound!.
When that question is asked in theory, there are no animals or creatures of any kind near the area, that is the whole point of the question!. It is a solely theoretical situation, people are missing the point with all this talk of animals hearing it!. The question is trying to address the fundamental nature of sound, not an actual situation in a forest with animals around!.
In that "theoretical situation" the fallen tree would have produced only vibrations!.

And, if you fall and no one else is around, of course your going to make a sound because you hear it yourself!.

Yes, sound waves produce vibrations composed of frequencies, but the key point is being capable of being detected by ears!. They still need to be detected by ears!.
Vibrational frequencies produce no sound in and of themselves without an auditory sensory conversion to sound, they are simply oscillations of air or whatever medium the are traveling through!.

I suspect the owls nesting in the tree would hear and feel plenty perterbed by their nest site falling over!. Humans are not the only ones with ears!. Sometimes I wonder if those who say there is no sound are referring to the fact that animals do not appear to have libraries where research and day to day occurences are recorded!. I remember when the tree fell on my neighbors Volvo during the storm of 2006!. "Krunk" !!! Would animals recall dates , times and sounds !? I suspect sounds are memorable!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
