Read the Crito!. Socrates went to his death based on an idea that it would unjust to violate the laws of Athens that had nurtured and raised him!. The speech does not inspire many philosophers to agree with this strange idea that it might be unjust to escape a death penalty that was not justly applied!. A man who is not guilty of the charges still argues that it would be unjust for him to escape even though the consequence of his doing so seem slight or nil!. Most philosophers will argue that he was old and ready to go!. A complected way to commit suicide!. For a different view see R!.E!. Allen's Comment to this dialog!. He argues that Socrates argument is valid and that "in so far as was in his power" Socrates would be undermining the laws of his City if he escapes!.
