"We're always proving 'who' we are,!.!.
Always reaching for that 'shining star" ---so the song goes!.
The ego - a powerful force that tends to intensify when being suppressed and dwarfed!. This is a kind of man's 'defense mechanism, rising over and above himself most of the time!. But it becomes powerful!.!.!. only when we allow it to go pass our sense of humility and meekness, plus the fact that other's abilities and knowledge could excel ours!.!.!. although we are all born equal in rights!.
Ego can be overcome with 'enough' faith in self, and a more supportive look at another's 'gift'!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It isn't the most powerful force of all!. Death wipes it out in the blink of an eye!. Self can to but it is a long and slow struggle that if persistent wins!.

It seems powerful because we do not know where to begin and never start to confront it!. It is like being in a field and thinking it is endless in all directions and then walking a mile or so and then coming to a cliff and seeing the ocean!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It absolutely is the most powerful force--in the consciousness of Man's life!. The forces of universe are greater, unless and until we have learned to "obey nature" itself!.
"We cannot command nature except by obeying her!." Francis Bacon, echoed by Ayn Rand and *in theory* all physicists--except those who contradict each other!

But Freud called it the "executive" of the faculty of Reason; and as the executive, it performs the same functions as the executive of a company, and must do just as good a job!.

Comte wanted everyone to embrace his "altruism" which he defined as "self-abnegation" for the purposes of benefitting the Catholic Church!. I do not recommend self-abnegation!.

This link defines "altruism" as the opposite of "egoism!." http://www!.iep!.utm!.edu/e/egoism!.htm#SH2a When the ego is acting as a rational executive, it is said to be "rationally egoistic!." Egoism, you will understand, is not the same at all as egotism, which is selfishness at the expense of other people, usually without concern that it is at their expense!. Egotists are always insufferable, even if they never violate anyone else's rights!.

Egoists are sometimes insufferable, like me, for knowing a lot of stuff and contradicting the so called "experts!." Ayn Rand, who championed "rational egoism," was despised by many for lambasting the metaphysics of Plato; and for saying, "Aristotle regarded “essence” as metaphysical; Objectivism regards it as epistemological," and for then proceeding to use her altered Aristotileanism to speak her mind (and write some awsome novels, too!.)

But she championed the rights of everyone, from homosexuals to theists, and even to Communists (her worst enemies--she spoke at the HUAC) to speak, but not to act; because for a Communist to act on his political ideas was to deny the individual his sovereignty and deny the common sovereignty not only guaranteed by the Constitution, but of the rights of men whether or not the Constituion ever existed!.

Now THAT is a VERY POWERFUL , rational ego!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As Australian band called " Sky Hooks " had a song 20 years ago called " Ego is not a dirty word "
I think that sums it up !.!.
Even compassionate people have an ego!.!.
Evey one likes recognition for what they have achieved!.!.
Is that egotistical !?!?
I think love is more powerful in the end!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, because the ego is 100% selfish and depends on knocking someone else down to build itself up!. It has no life of its own!. Such a life is, in the end, totally self destructive!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ego ia what prevents one from attaining liberation!.
Self always IS!. It cannot be destroyed!. Ego can be and should be destroyed!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ego can be the most powerful, but at the same time, it can also be the most fragile!.!.!.!.!.Wrap your brain around that!Www@QuestionHome@Com
