To follow your heart means to follow your emotional response to a situation!.

Determining what is right or wrong is part of your reasoning process, so following your heart would avoid the reasoning process!. (You might call acting on reason "Following your soul" since the morals and ethics of a situation are decided there!.)

Sometimes following your heart can be effective in choosing, such as between one boyfriend verses another!. For example, your mind is unable to choose logically between the two, so you allow your heart (emotions) to lead you to whomever brings you the greater joy!.
